People often need an escape and to laugh a bit, even more so after 2020. Maybe for that reason, the Internet involuntarily found a muse for current bleak times, none other than Queen Elizabeth II. At 94 (she’ll complete the impressive 95 mark in April), she is the Queen of Memes, without question.

The trend is referred as “Immortal”, or a full description of Queen Elizabeth Is Immortal.  It’s a homage to the remarkably long-lasting reign and life of the monarch, and started in March 2020, after news that Prince Charles had COVID-19 and that she could outlive him. From there are pointing out she would outlive all was a small step, especially these “jokes” aren’t new. It’s been a while that the social media teases the longevity of the Queen.

Ironically, prince Philip, who turns a 100 years old in June, didn’t inspire the same sort of devotion. That is because Elizabeth II ticks many boxes: the longest-living and longest-reigning British Monarch, the longest-serving female head of state (and monarch) in history, and both the oldest and longest-serving current head of state.

The current trend started on Reddit, moved to Twitter and now is pretty much everywhere.
