MITA never again

Rio de Janeiro is lacking in concerts. “Nobody” comes more often or hardly ever comes and the only thing you hear from businessmen is that it is too expensive to organize an event in Rio and that “Cariocas don’t pay”. Maybe that’s why we witnessed such a sad night as the opening of MITA 2023.

Lana Del Rey was back in town after 10 years, and even more so, 4 years without stepping on a stage. Her fans border on hysteria in their adoration and she’s diva, she’s cute, she’s friendly and she doesn’t disappoint. But those who didn’t pay 2,200 reais (if they bought it before it sold out and didn’t have to go through resale) or aren’t famous to win a free ticket, were left out of the “premium” corral, which is 100% of the area in front of the stage. The 1,100 reais ticket to the “track”, is behind four towers, a sound house, and squeezed between the food and drink kiosks. Everything so that the Corcovado stage has a beautiful view of Christ in the background.

Even though the pandemic is “over”, it is a dangerous place in every way because the crowding meant that no one could move. It is no exaggeration to get tense in anticipation that any “problem” would all be trampled. Sneezing and coughing triggered the recent danger, but you can’t live in panic. And you also shouldn’t be able to go to a concert where the last thing you can do is see or HEAR something. That’s right! The Jockey is in a residential area, so the volume of all presentations turns out to be low, which would be ok if at least it was well mixed. The noise that should be sound is not ideal. Combining all this with drinks sold for 40 reais and a slice of pizza for 50, what is left to praise the event? I was already a little shocked that I barely managed to hear Jorge Benjor‘s voice that was cut in the final song. It wasn’t his privilege, they did the same to the star of the night, Lana Del Rey couldn’t finish a song before having to leave.

What the event map (below) does not show is that among the premium area, the field of view of the track area is obstructed by at least 80% because of the structure. Misleading advertising.

In the face of all this, good luck São Paulo! Last year’s MITA in the city was the opposite of what I described, an uncluttered space and great sound. Even in Rio, which was inferior, because the sound had already been too low, at least the “mortals” could get closer to the Gorillaz stage and enjoy the night. Pure illusion.

In 2024? Well, as a salaried citizen, I’ll have to consider hanging out on YouTube and imagining how great it would be to be on the show. Unable to pay more than a thousand reais to be entitled to enter a corral and be mistreated like that. Cariocas should never pay for that.
