The premiere of The Idol series has been moving social networks for days (for months, in fact) both because of the vacuum left by the conclusion of great successes and the anticipation fueled by controversies. Pornography, drugs, abuse… themes that already appear in Euphoria, also by showrunner Sam Levinson, but which, when transported to the universe of music and entertainment in Hollywood, will make it “at home”. The series marks the acting debut of Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and puts Lily-Rose Depp at the head of an ensemble cast, testing her versatility as an actress.

The summary provided by Max (formerly HBO) reads, “After a nervous breakdown derails Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) latest tour, she’s determined to reclaim her rightful status as America’s biggest, sexiest pop star. Her passions are rekindled by Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), a nightclub entrepreneur with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or to the deepest, darkest depths of her soul?” Yeah, if Daisy Jones and The Six was a romantic version of the trajectory of Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac, without a doubt that Jocelyn’s mirror is Britney Spears.

Obviously, the soundtrack promises to be a killer, although the single Popular, featuring Madonna, was weak. Double Fantasy was a little better, but what has been building anticipation are the comments that there will be explicit nudity, sex, and drugs, as well as the harsh reviews after the Cannes release. The realism on stage was questioned, but anyone who follows Levinson’s work knows that his rule lies in the discomfort itself. And in intensity. The production disagreements, with director Amy Seimetz leaving before finishing work, with Lily-Rose‘s comments/complaints about The Weeknd‘s method, everything put the series in the trending topics even before it is released to the general public. According to what was leaked, what was meant to be a story about the limits of fame and creativity, explored by power and sex, became a story of abuse, abuser, and complacent victim.
In any case, the release of The Idol promises to divide and, once again, take us to the universe of the stars. More on the series when it becomes available!
