The “TV Oscar” award, the Emmy Awards, takes place isolated from other events, in the second half of the year and a few months away from the nominations at the Film Academy party. And the nominations will be announced on July 12th, literally just over 30 days away. At this point, the year 2023 is pretty much closed in on two series snapping up the top categories: Succession and Ted Lasso. Still, there is a lot of quality content that should have at least an indication, let’s start speculating?

Drama
According to Variety – and I agree – the list should be:
Series:
Andor
Better Call Saul
The Crown
House of the Dragon
The Last of Us
Succession
The White Lotus
yellowjackets
Among them, I always think The Crown runs on autopilot. The last heavy season was the 4th, but the 5th stays in the shadow of the Queen’s death and the current royal drama of the Royal Family, taking away the shine and attention, although not so much the context. What was happening in the reality-adapted fiction series is the seed of what is happening today, but in the face of the overexposure of this dysfunctional family, third-party commercial abuse of the Windsors’ pain is already bothersome. It’s over. What’s more, Succession is the fever of the year.
Actor
Brian Cox
Kieran Culkin
Diego Luna
Bob Odenkirk
Pedro Pascal
Jeremy Strong
The fight is between the Roys of Succession, and Variety is betting on the victory of the only one who has not yet been recognized with the award: Kieran Culkin. And it makes sense, he really was spectacular in the final season. Brian Cox is almost a tribute, as he was in five minutes of two episodes. I don’t rule out recognition once again for Jeremy Strong, but it could really be Kieran’s year, who will definitely step out of the shadow of his most famous brother in real life, Macaulay, and will have the prestige of being awarded.
Actress
Melanie Lynskey
Helen Mirren
Elisabeth Moss
Bella Ramsey
Sarah Snook
Imelda Staunton
I find it almost offensive to indicate Imelda Staunton for her performance as Queen Elizabeth II, she still hasn’t surpassed her predecessors with a delivery that alternated between passive and subdued. Being on the list is proof of hype, but Sarah Snook is guaranteed the winner with a pivotal Shiv Roy in Succession‘s plot.

Supporting actor
F. Murray Abraham
Giancarlo Esposito
Matthew Macfadyen
Jonathan Pryce
Alan Ruck
Matt Smith
Alexander Skarsgård
Stellan Skarsgård
I would say that this category would be the most complex because it unites another fever – The White Lotus – and great actors, and Matthew Macfadyen has already won an award for Succession. But he is undoubtedly the favorite, as much as I wished for Paddy Considine‘s recognition in House of the Dragon.
Supporting actress
Carol Burnett
Olivia Cooke
Jennifer Coolidge
Elizabeth Debicki
Meghan Fahy
Christina Ricci
Rhea Seehorn
J. Smith-Cameron
Another category with big names, but, in this case, another repeat with Jennifer Coolidge for The White Lotus. We don’t even need to theorize about other names. Obviously, I’m glad they included Olivia Cooke on the list!
Series Director
Peter Gould
Michael Sapochnik
Peter Hoar
Mark Mylod
Andrij Parekh
Lorene Scafaria
Mike White
Let’s agree that this could be the category where the tie would be fairer? But Variety bets on Mylod because of Succession. I’m going with them but still dumbfounded by the list.

Drama Script
Sharon Horgan, Dave Finkel, Brett Baer, Bad Sisters
Peter Morgan, The Crown
Peter Gould, Better Call Saul
Craig Mazin, The Last of Us
Shonda Rhimes, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story
Jesse Armstrong, Succession
Mike White, The White Lotus
Another complex but obvious category. Jesse Armstrong will take it, but Mike White made the same worldwide fever with the second season of The White Lotus and Shonda Rhimes broke Netflix records with the Bridgerton spin-off, Queen Charlotte. But here prevails what “delivers” closer to the party and with that Succession‘s farewell will guarantee Armstrong the prize.
Guest star Actor series
Murray Bartlett, The Last of Us
James Cromwell, Succession
Giancarlo Esposito, The Mandalorian
Arian Moayed, Succession
Nick Offerman, The Last of Us
Andy Serkis, Andor
Another tough category, but I’m going with Variety in recognizing Nick Offerman‘s great performance in The Last of Us. Although I do not rule out in the wake of the Succession wave, that James Cromwell is chosen…
Guest star Actress Series
Hiam Abbass, Succession
Betsy Brandt, Better Call Saul
Melanie Lynskey, The Last of Us
Fiona Shaw, Andor
Anna Torv, The Last of Us
Harriet Walter, Succession
In whatever category Fiona Shaw appears, I have my vote, but exceptionally, I agree with Variety that it will be Harriet Walter‘s night. your mother raw
