In addition to Rhaenyra, Emma D’Arcy voices the feminist icon

The author herself, Elizabeth Fremantle, celebrated: “Guess who narrated the DISOBEDIENT audiobook? The amazing Emma D’Arcy, who you might know as Queen Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon. When I listened to the tapes I got goosebumps,” she wrote.

Disobedient is a new biography about the painter Artemisia Gentileschi, one of the leading painters of the 17th century who was raped by a friend of her father and when she dared ask for justice, she was vilified and tortured, forever scarred by trauma. Her story and her work were forgotten for four centuries until the feminist movement rediscovered her. After her book Firebrand, about Queen Katherine Parr, was turned into a movie with Alicia Vikander in the lead role, one can hope that Artemisia’s life will also come back from the pages to the screen.

Emma D’Arcy is in the midst of filming the second season of House of the Dragon, although she has yet to be seen on the exterior. Just as Rhaenyra fights prejudice and injustice, Artemisia is a symbol of resistance for women who are shamed and silenced after experiencing sexual violence. Surely the book will be amazing.
