If you haven’t been following the Hijack series, starring and produced by Idris Elba, you’re missing the flight! There are only seven episodes and it’s already in full swing with the third episode (each is released on Tuesdays).
The story unfolds in real-time from the hijacking of the title, Flight KA29, between Dubai and London, where we still don’t know who or why the passengers are the target of terrorist action. The estimated travel time is seven hours, but adverse circumstances force the bandits to start acting ‘before’ than expected and the presence of Sam Nelson (Idris Elba) among the passengers could change the course of the plan. He is a talented negotiator – officially from the business world – but those who follow him soon realize that there is something else we still don’t know. More on that below. The series takes us to follow Sam’s (apparent) strategy to save everyone on board, after all, he just wants to get home and deal with the end of his marriage, but his decisions can contribute to a tragedy. While incommunicado in the air, authorities on the ground soon identify the hijacking and try to find alternatives to save all the lives on board. Everyone is running against time.
Created and directed by George Kay, Netflix‘s Lupin, and Jim Field Smith, Hijack is suspenseful in the right tone, has a clearly intricate plot, and is of incredible quality. Of course, Idris’ charisma drives 80% of the action, but that doesn’t mean it’s a problem at all. I suspect Sam’s intention and role, there are several signs that there is much more there than we are realizing and I will list in another post where I will work theories. For now, here’s the tip: don’t miss it!
