Where does the circle begin and where does it end?

The Full Circle series brings a strong signature from award-winning director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Ed Solomon. At a deliberately slow and suffocating pace, they throw us into a wheel of life and death that unites the most unlikely people and a conclusion that promises to be unexpected. The series opens with the warning that in a circle you never know where it starts and where it ends, so it’s a matter of letting go and letting go.

HBO Max itself warns in the description that it is a “complex” story and in this case, it applies. The story begins with a crime, still unexplained, which leads to another crime, with other people, “for revenge”. We’re connected, we just don’t understand how yet.

Interconnected lives unite immigrants, rich and poor with little understanding of what’s going on. Who leads the action is the matriarch Savitri Mahabir (CCH Pounder) who wants to take revenge for the death of her brother to close a cycle of negative energy that caused a tragedy. For that, she doesn’t go after who killed him but decides to kidnap and kill Jared (Ethan Stoddard), the son of a wealthy white family, Sam (Claire Danes), and Derek Browne (Timothy Olyphant). Sam is the daughter of celebrity chef Jeff McCusker (Dennis Quaid), who still doesn’t understand who wants to hurt his grandson.

The fact that we know who doesn’t help at all because it lacks precisely why. That’s what makes Full Circle interesting. The story is one of simple revenge, involving innocent and guilty, but what confuses us are the motivations. There will only be six episodes, so they will not be estimated. At the end of the first two, three more powerful questions remain: why was Mahabir’s brother murdered and found with more money than he expected? Why is Nicky (Lucian Zanes) stalking and robbing Jared? What did Chef Jeff do for the Mahabir family that broke the circle? There are obviously more, but these three have deliberately not been explained.

“Out” of the circle, but entering it is also Mel Harmony (Zazie Beetz), a postal inspector who investigates insurance fraud by Mahabir’s organization. She joins the criminal workforce, which includes immigrants Louis (Gerald Jones), Natalia (Adia), and Xavier (Sheyi Cole), who are controlled and threatened by Mahabir. The trio tries to find a way out and save Nicky (apparently succeeding), but is seriously threatened from all sides.

With so much still to be explained, Full Circle ends up being one of the interesting content of the moment. Worth following.
