Diana: fashion black sheep

When the shy young Princess Diana showed up wearing a woolen sheepskin sweater, she brought the fashion world to a halt. From the outside, one would never think that someone with style would choose that wide, informal, and even childish model in their designs, but a legend was being born.

Best of all was the message. Among the sheep, there was the black sheep, the one that stands out from the group and never follows the rules. Who better than Diana to represent her?

The pullover was so classic that it had its representative in the fourth season of The Crown, which showed the princess’s early years in the Royal Family. Diana was just 19 when she was photographed watching then-fiancé Prince (now King) Charles‘ polo match. The piece – signed by Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne, from Warm & Wonderful – is going to auction in September, where it is expected to raise more than 50 thousand dollars (they estimate up to 80 thousand, which would be more than 380 thousand reais), not bad for an item that still costs $250 in the store today, about $1,200 in 2023.

The two stylists still don’t know to this day how Diana discovered the sweater, they only found out that she had one when her photos made a splash and put the store on the world’s radar. In addition to the princess, David Bowie, and Andy Warhol are some of the celebrities mentioned by them as fans of the rebellious sheep.

Diana didn’t just have one of them but ended up with two. The original had damage to the sleeve, which the stylists believe was caused when she caught the diamond and sapphire engagement ring in the lines. They knitted a new one and sent it back to her, and she was photographed again years later, in 1983 (40 years ago!), mixing it with white jeans and a black tie. Diana was already a fashion icon.

It is precisely the piece that was returned for repair that is going to be auctioned. Joanna Osborne discovered the forgotten original in a box in an attic earlier this year. The auction will run from the 7th to the 13th of December, with online bidding open from the 31st of August to the 14th of September.
