The second season of The Afterparty apparently hasn’t been as groundbreaking as the first (I miss Yasper, I’ll say that all the time!), but it’s still fun and smart. In the third episode we are still a long way from deducing ‘who killed’, but, as always, there is a narrow list of suspects to consider.
In season 1, Xavier’s death was weird, but he had so many people with envy or resentment that it made the game more fun. Here is different. Edgar (Zach Woods) turns up dead next to his fiancée and suspect number Grace (Poppy Liu), who had known him for only six months and who raises many doubts as to whether he wasn’t marrying for money. What ‘saved’ her, for now, is precisely being the sister of Zoe (Zoe Chao), who was at the party with Aniq (Sam Richardson), both left from the 1st season and more than unlucky to be at a party again that ends up with someone in the coffin. Grace, to make matters worse, was the last one to have Edgar alive and the person who found him. She gives her sugary version, in the form of a period film, inspired by Jane Austen.

We had already seen the first distanced version of Edgar’s death under the narrative of Aniq, in the format of a romantic comedy sequel. This time, Aniq is definitely excluded from the group of suspects (we still can’t say the same about Zoe who, once again, may have reasons).
As each episode is a style, the one of the week brings the version of Travis (Paul Walter Hauser), Grace’s ex-boyfriend, in a film noir. He, who is adept at conspiracy theory, is seeing everything as drama and suspense, although he himself sounds extremely guilty at times and was genuinely hurt to have lost Grace. We split up before checking out the account of Hannah (Anna Konkle), Edgar’s adoptive sister, who sees everything as a story from an independent cult film. It will certainly be funny.
We still have to understand the motivation of Edgar’s strange mother, Isabel (Elizabeth Perkins), the biggest suspect of all so far (she said that Edgar’s father “died the same way, poisoned”). In addition to her, Edgar’s best friend and best man, Sebastian (Jack Whitehall), also acts strange. Another curiosity is the fun uncle of Grace and Zoe, Ulysses (John Cho), who appeared by surprise, making veiled threats to the groom (and irritating his brother, Feng (Ken Jeong)). Grace’s mother, Vivian (Vivian Wu), is also against the marriage (without making it clear who and why).

And here’s the tip, it’s worth reviewing each episode and every detail because they gain another perspective when it passes to a different narrator. For example, who was the naked man Aniq saw running? (Hint… it appeared to be Sebastian and in the Ulysses narrative, Feng and Vivian will appear as if Aniq was with him)
Trust me, The After Party is still guaranteed fun!
