The impact of Sinéad O’Connor’s passage through international music cannot be measured today. What we remember most are the controversies she was the center of after she rose to fame. Sinéad was a person with a suffering, painful soul who refused to remain silent. According to The Irish Times, she died today, aged 56. They did not reveal the cause.

Since the death of her 17-year-old son, Shane, in 2022, the singer has canceled shows. Sinéad exploded in the late 1980s with her unique singing style and shaved hair. Irish, she was an activist and notoriously critical of the Catholic Church. She suffered childhood abuse, dealt with addiction and depression, and was excommunicated for tearing up a photo of Pope John Paul II during a TV broadcast, calling him a “true enemy.”
I still consider her first album The Lion and The Cobra her best, but it was with the second that she turned Prince‘s hitherto unknown song, Nothing Compares To You, into a true anthem. I sincerely hope you found peace.
