40 years ago, Madonna made everybody dance

In 1983, a singer whose single Everybody played non-stop on the Radio released her first album. In the midst of the new wave, she still insisted on the disco line, and to everyone’s great surprise (we hadn’t seen a picture of her yet and she wasn’t leading MTV), Madonna was blonde with blue eyes and liked to dance.

40 years later we can still point out Madonna as an irregular album, even more so that the classic Like a Virgin would follow, and only after True Blue (which she produced) that Madonna established her signature. Still, it’s full of classics.

The opening track, Lucky Star, became a trademark. Holiday is still present in the set lists of all her shows and Everybody was her first single. There’s still OK Burning Up, a quick flirtation with the new wave, as well as You Know It. Borderline was one of her biggest hits since following the video and the ‘Madonna look’, and Physical Attraction, now forgotten, played frequently on the radio.

The lack of cohesion in the sound of this album is due to the plurality of producers – from the DJs who dated the singer to those imposed by the record company – so even with the hits, it is not a favorite.

Madonna was only 23 years old when she recorded the album that was really focused on playing on the dancefloor and on the radio. If they paid attention to what she was singing, she warned in Burning Up: “Unlike the others, I’d do anything / I’m not the same, I’m not ashamed”. Does anyone doubt her sincerity today?
