Physical: Ghosts of the Past, Vision of the Future

Physical is a difficult series to digest and define. By showing how a savvy entrepreneur builds an empire through a line of aerobic exercise, the series takes seriously eating disorder issues such as bulimia. The role is perfect for Rose Byrne who gives depth to Sheila Rubin’s problems, surviving sexual abuse, a toxic marriage, and even an extramarital affair without losing focus on the business. The duality of selling ‘health’ when she herself is far from a healthy life is just one of the interesting details of the series created, written, and produced by Annie Weisman and directed by Stephanie Laing.

In its farewell season, Physical brings a new antagonist to Sheila, who just with the negative voices she hears in her head would be suffering enough. After finally divorcing Danny (Rory Scovel) and breaking up with John Breem (Paul Sparks), Sheila sees Kelly Kilmartin (Zooey Deschanel) as competition on every level. Not even Greta’s (Dierdre Friel) support helps. In the first two episodes, Sheila is honestly trying to be a better person, as much as possible, of course. It will be as she warns, a process. And we root for her.
