Who uses who in Special Ops Lioness?

The trajectory of Marine Cruz (Laysla DeOliveira) is the heart of the Special Ops Lioness series. Suffering, abused, and without anyone, she found in the Army a minimum of companionship, focus, and the possibility of defending herself, but, when accepting to be part of the Special Operation as an infiltrated agent, she entered new territory. The mission was to approach the daughter of a terrorist banker in order to kill him. But the needy and isolated Aalyiah (Stephanie Nur) manages to find Cruz’s breaking point: it’s not violence, but love. Should have been a mission abort, but alas…

As we saw, the two fall in love, and Cruz goes crazy. She seeks out Joe (Zoe Saldaña) – equally in crisis over his family drama and his daughter’s accident – to throw in the towel before the worst happens. She admits to being emotionally compromised and that she won’t be able to complete the mission because she doesn’t want to hurt Aalyiah. Even without being convincing or fooling Kailyn (Nicole Kidman), Joe throws in the manipulative speech to “rediscover the marine inside Cruz”. The reality is that the mission goes wrong one way or another, the best thing is to still try to reach the original objective and hope for the best. Now it’s Kaitlyn who goes into rebel mode to give her team a chance. Everyone’s jobs (and lives) are at risk depending on Cruz. I swear, it wasn’t for lack of warning!

The series, which is semi-inspired by an actual CIA program, is heading to its conclusion next week and (see promo) will be as explosive as its opening. It’s another hit by Taylor Sheridan who puts a trio of convincing women in the lead and a drama that has originality. There is no confirmed second season and that raises the possibility of an unexpected or dramatic ending. Critics are betting it will be a Special Ops franchise, not necessarily sticking with the current one.

It remains to be seen how the option ends this story, but so far Special Ops: Lioness has been a refreshing choice to put women in compelling roles in the spy universe. It brings an interesting and lacking dynamic in the market. Cruz, as expected, will try to spare Aalyiah in some way and it can be much more dangerous than simply going through with the deal. We’ll see.
