Decidedly 2023 is the year to mark the definitive change in the world of entertainment. With the writers’ strike since May, and the actors since July, the fight has so far been against the big studios and platforms, but it won’t stop there. Since it’s time to balance things out, the actors’ union announced on September 1st something that shook another lucrative industry: gaming. That’s right, the big video game companies are also in the discussion that involves image rights and the use of Artificial Intelligence, among other problems. The Union’s president, actress Fran Drescher, leads the movement, officially becoming our “Sarah Connor“, who dedicated her life to fighting the overuse of technology in The Terminator.

The impasse in negotiations over a new video game contract, which discusses salary increases and protection against artificial intelligence, served as yet another cause for paralysis. Considering that negotiations with the Film and Television Producers Alliance have not yet resumed, starting another one means shaking up Hollywood.

The union has a separate contract with major video game makers, which was supposed to expire in November but has been extended by a year to allow for further discussions. The demands are the same as those on the tables of film and TV studios, and the use of AI in Games is even more worrying and demands protection because it captures the voice and performance of actors, but, just like in films, the Union understands that “greed and disrespect” drive the current market, reducing job opportunities.

As with the studios, the Actors’ Strike is nothing new. In 2016 the strike lasted 11 months. In addition to demands for an 11% raise, and restriction of AI use, the union is also calling for rest periods, safety protections, and provisions in place for TV and film, which include a ban on stunts during self-recorded tests and a requirement to medical presence in the recordings. Representatives of the video game companies are hoping to reach an agreement before something more radical, but everyone is watching. If Fran is a minimum like Sarah, the fight will be ugly
