For at least the last six years, the Venice Film Festival has been the best barometer of Oscar favorites. And in 2023, the two main competitors in the Best Actress category have already been defined: Emma Stone for Poor Things and Cailee Spaeny, for Priscilla. Although a relative “newbie”, Cailee takes the lead in Sofia Coppola’s biopic about Priscilla Presley. Unanimous praise, a hint of controversy (some do not agree with Elvis Presley‘s widow’s narrative about their romance), but definitely interesting.

Emma Stone is – according to critics – bold and unsurpassed as a feminist Frankenstein, starring in sex and nudist scenes in a role that highlights her versatility. As the script is written by the brilliant Tony MacNamara (from The Great and The Favorite) I have blind faith that the film is intelligent and humorous. She was the clear favorite to win Best Actress, but it’s hard to beat the precision and delicacy of Sofia’s hand over her stars. Her films are soft, modern, and emotional, which is important to bring a different perspective to Elvis’ story, especially so close to Baz Luhrmann’s film. The victory as an actress is a victory for Priscilla and it is always interesting to follow.
If it didn’t win in Venice, it doesn’t mean that Emma is out of the running when the Oscars happen in 2024. Poor Things, by Yorgos Lanthimos, is the big winner as a film, taking the Golden Lion and breaking the chain of biographies or real stories of last years. Billed as a feminist fable, one that the director already had ready to film in 2018, but waited for “the right moment”, it is the story of Isabella Baxter, the woman who struggles to deal with and understand the world’s restrictive patriarchy and decides to destroy it.

Not exactly a surprise, Peter Sarsgaard‘s sensitive performance as a man suffering from dementia in Memory certainly places him among the finalists for Best Actor at the Oscars.
The strikes by actors and screenwriters, with no signs of ending yet, have put all the awards shows on standby. The Emmys, which would now take place in September, has already been postponed to 2024, in January, they hope. This disrupts a lot of things, in addition to the broadcasters’ large programming schedule. As time passes, the “oldest” performances end up being forgotten. Let’s see how it is resolved. For now, finalists for Actor, Actress, and Supporting Roles are already being defined between Oppenheimer, Barbie, Poor Things, and Priscilla, without a doubt. Emma Stone is clearly aiming for her second Oscar in 2024. Let’s follow along!
