For Rebels fans, these were two emotional reunions for different reasons. Seeing the good guys and villains (?) who became legendary in the animated series was a cause for great anxiety. And it was worth the wait.
The uninitiated don’t understand all the fuss about an Admiral, yet another who wants to dominate the Galaxy, but Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) is more cunning and strategic than anyone else in Star Wars. Only the sagacity of Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi), who sacrificed himself to save the Galaxy and his friends, managed to literally exile the danger to a place unknown to many. However, during these five years of forced exile inside the Star Destroyer Chimaera on the planet of Peridea. With time on his hands and trust in his minions, he planned – as always, precisely – how to locate his cunning opponent. The heart is the shortcut that often puts everything at risk. Remember the scratched record from Game of Thrones? Yes, Love is the death of Duty. A complex lesson, the application of which brings pain, hurt, and mistakes.
As we are not in Westeros, the phrase is never said but is between the lines. Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) has a Jon Snow-Ned Stark drive to always do what’s right over what she feels. She knows, however, that Sabine Wren does not. At least, not yet, and not all the time. She may have helped Ezra trick Thrawn out of the loop in the past, but she never gave up on finding her friend again. Her opponents knew about this possibility and played on it. They are ahead of the game.

Well, episode 6 of Ahsoka, the third to last, brings back old acquaintances and presents a new universe and creatures for the franchise. New and Historic side by side, with different plans in progress. Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) wants to stop Thrawn’s ascension, Sabine wants to find and save Ezra, and Baylan Skoll (Ray Stevenson) wants something else entirely. He doesn’t want Jedis or Thrawn, but to “break the wheel”. Unfortunately, Stevenson’s black death doesn’t make me stick to Baylan’s trajectory, who will necessarily have to find a replacement to lead a parallel revolution.
Ahsoka and Huyang follow inside the colossal purrgil that is heading to Peridea and comment that she fears that Sabine’s choice is even more risky than she dared to reveal to the others. Everyone thinks she was captured, but Ahsoka knows it was a betrayal. She does not judge her apprentice but is uncertain of the consequences. After all, her spiritual reunion with Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) reminded her of how Darth Vader came to be and the long and painful path he took to his redemption.

Morgan Elsbeth is calm about her journey and advantage in the game. Peridea was the ancient home of the Dathomiri and also served as the purrgil burial ground, giving us context on how Thrawn and Ezra ended up there and how Ahsoka and Huyang will come too. Only Thrawn, the excellent player, already anticipates that Ahsoka survived and will not stop trying to prevent her from returning. That’s when we realize how evil her mind always works. He already leads an army of samurai-like ‘Night Troopers’, led by Captain Enoch, golden-faced and idolizing Thrawn more than just following him. Sabine’s ‘capture’ has double use in his plans (it’s not clear how he did them in five seconds of reunion, but it’s fantasy and Star Wars, logic doesn’t apply): he knows that she will find Ezra and that he will also leave from his hiding place when he sees her, so it will be easier to (try to) eliminate him.
And from what we see, that’s what happens. Sabine meets her friend again in a village inhabited by the Noti, crab-like aliens with whom Ezra apparently integrated to survive. He’s happy to find her and be able to “go home,” but he pauses from asking “How did you get there”? signals that he picked up something wrong in the air. Sabine is so happy that she let her guards down, but holds off confessing that she threw the sacrifice he made in the trash because missing her took away his sense of Duty.

With only two episodes to “complete”, but with the knowledge that there will be a film with Thrawn, the expectation is not for many closed plots. What will Ezra’s reaction be when he finds out about Sabine’s betrayal? How will they deal with Baylan’s absolute and certain departure with the plan to see the circus burn down? I foresee frustration ahead, but I share fans’ excitement for another installment in the franchise to give us content to journey through Star Wars.
