There are drama series and there are drama series, especially those that recount the toxic relationship of apparently broken marriages. Dr. Foster, Anatomy of Scandal, and Wilderness, from Amazon Prime Video. We always open with the idyllic relationship of a beautiful couple only to discover that betrayal is the tip of the iceberg.

Each of the series has its own quality, but they come up against the flirtation of the serial genre. And with each “surprising” turn, it moves away from any realism and original proposal from the beginning. In the three stories, our heroine is taken by surprise with a lie about her husband, they go through a period of gaslighting until the tragedy reveals itself in a violent way, hiding unimaginable secrets. Wilderness is the latest ‘soap opera’ with this proposal.
Olivia (Jenna Coleman) and Will (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) are in love, rich, beautiful, and with a dream life in New York. She comes from a home marked by her parents’ traumatic separation, but Will comes from a wealthy family and they are both in New York because of his work. One day, by accident, Liv discovers that Will had an affair with a colleague, but what was “just one night” was actually a relationship, and when ‘investigating’ her husband, she discovers a series of lies.
Instead of crying (or believing) Will, Liv is like Dr. Foster: goes for revenge. A trip initially proposed for reconciliation turns into a nightmare when the lover appears in the same place, accompanied by her husband. The pressure increases and an accident changes the entire dynamic of the relationship.

The series is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by B. E. Jones, whose tagline was love can hurt, betrayal can kill. Divided into six episodes, it does its job reasonably well until halfway through, then it is completely incomprehensible. Liv has reasons and opportunities to leave Will, but she stays with him in a toxic, dramatic relationship whose surprises and twists leave us more confused by her than supportive. After all, in the middle of the millennium, Will is a typical 1950s husband and it is not clear why he wants to stay married, be with Liv, and still want to have all the affairs he collects. But understanding toxic men is no longer interesting, they are and should be disposable. But then we wouldn’t have a story, would we?
Olivia’s (criminal) empowerment hides a coldness of reasoning and projects a desire for annihilation that was dreamed of by many women. She plans the ‘lesson’ she wants to teach her unfaithful husband and quickly adapts her plans. A true accident changes the dynamics of the relationship but accelerates the journey to tragedy. SPOILER! The intention was not to punish the lover, but Will, however, the confusion that results in crime is the trigger for an unpredictable, destructive Olivia and more than ever determined to annihilate Will. A divorce would be less lethal.
With magazine settings and Jenna Coleman committed to showing Olivia’s dark side. The soundtrack is another highlight of Wilderness. If it weren’t for the lack of new content available, I might not recommend it, but if you’re looking for something to distract yourself… it’s six hours of soap opera!
