It was Joy (Andrea Martin)! No, it was Scott Bakula! Wait, did Jan (Amy Ryan) get out of prison? Who would be lurking to try to kill Charles (Steve Martin)? Which of the triplets did it? Oops, I’m already speculating about the new crime, or attempted crime, in Arconia because there are only murderers in the building. At least they suggest that Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch) may have survived. That’s right, the brilliant third season of Only Murders in the Building says goodbye by placing our trio of podcasters once again in the middle of a crime, and wow, how intense it was!

The final episode of the season marks the successful debut of the musical Death Rattle Dazzle, with Oliver (Martin Short) shining on stage and off. That’s right, he had to come in at the last minute replacing Jonathan (Jason Veasey), who took an extra dose of tranquilizers. Everything is going well, Matthew Broderick is in the audience drying off the premiere and Mabel (Selena Gomez) is shining in a beautiful Vampire’s Wife dress. The excitement is in the wings: the trio continues with the plan to confront Donna (Linda Emond), who confesses everything without remorse or delay: she is in stage 4 cancer and wants to guarantee Cliff’s (Wesley Taylor) future as a producer before dying. As Maxine’s (Noma Dumezweni) criticism was going to kill the show, she poisoned the cookies for Ben (Paul Rudd). At first, she denied having pushed him down the elevator, but later admitted it. Easy right? In less than 10 minutes do we know who the killer of the season is? And everyone was moved by the maternal ‘sacrifice’. Obviously, it wouldn’t be finished.
The truth is that the person who actually killed Ben was Cliff (I got it right!) in an argument and accident when the actor threatened to report Donna’s attempted murder to the police. It’s all very exciting, tied together and again in metalanguage: the musical’s songs on stage anticipated what was happening behind the scenes. Amazing.
Tobert (Jesse Williams) tries to convince Mabel to accompany him to Los Angeles, in vain. Our heroine’s romances are just passing supporting roles. Loretta (Meryl Streep) is the star of the season, having to leave her contract relatively early because she will be a TV star and star in a Broadway classic (Hedda Gabbler), prioritizing not only her career that finally began at 70, but her relationship with Dickie (Jeremy Shamos), who now knows she is his mother and works as her agent. Cliff almost ruins everything by threatening to kill himself in the middle of the musical, but few know this. Anyway, a Happy Ending!

And so, we come to the next crime. Poor Sazz joins the party at Oliver’s house and tries to talk to Charles (“I have something sensitive to tell you”), but when the actor goes to get wine from his apartment, boom! A shot hits him in the chest! But wait, it’s not Charles, it’s Sazz! We say goodbye without knowing who shot, whether Sazz survived (the credits say they hope no one died this time, although this was in the Death Razze Dazzle poster) and we are once again in yet another mystery for the Only Murders in The Building podcasters to solve.
The season brought a spectacular soundtrack and outstanding performances, including Martin Short and Meryl Streep, but equally, Paul Rudd, who was funny and tragic with a complex Ben Glenroy in his insecurities, and Wesley Taylor, who also closed the season on a high with a Cliff is scary, sweet and dramatic as well as fun. I love Only Murders in The Building and yes, I’m already speculating who the killer is in the next one! I bet on Jan’s return! Let’s begin the game?
