In the fourth season, Netflix used a classic by The Smiths, How Soon Is Now, to “introduce” Princess Diana in The Crown, with a soundtrack full of hits from the 1980s that also brought messages about history. The formula was used again with the trailer for the fifth season, with the classic by the band The Verve, Bittersweet Symphony that sings how difficult it is to change who we really are and now, in the trailer for the final season, we hear Diana complain about the madness of the world and the harassment of her, to the sound of the classic Tears For Fears: Mad World.

The song was written by Roland Orzabal when he was just 19 years old after he heard Girls on Film by Duran Duran and wanted to write a new wave hit. Roland, who always struggled with depression, was also influenced by the theories of Arthur Janov, author of The Primal Scream, who argued that dreams in which there are death experiences are the best for releasing tension, which is why the chorus sings “the dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had.” Used here in The Crown, it sounds quite morbid, but what matters is the other part of the chorus, where it repeats “mad world”.
Released in 1982, Mad World put the band Tears for Fears on the global charts. and was included on the band’s debut LP, The Hurting, released in 1983 and which features the duo, Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, at Round Pond, in the gardens of Kensington Palace, where Diana would live until her death in 1997. Mad World is about an introverted person, suffering from the feeling of feeling oppressed and out of place in a world gone mad, which fits with the series’ narrative about not just Diana, but her children as well.

The original version by the British band has a more pop and danceable rhythm, which “disguises” the darker lyrics. It was only in 2001 when Gary Jules made an acoustic version of the film Donnie Darko, that Mad World gained a new perspective. I collect several versions here’s a playlist.
The somber tone of the promo, highlighting the impact of Diana’s death on the fate of the Crown, suggests that social media will catch fire again, separating the family in a binary way. The Crown premieres in a month, at the end of November. Until then, it will be crazy.
