Since the first season, some fans of The Gilded Age have decided: that the romantic couple we want is Larry Russell (Harry Richardson) and Marian Brooks (Louisa Jacobson). And in the second season, after a long night where they danced until dawn, the two were still not together. From the images in the second episode, somehow Marian will be at the Russells’ ball in Newport.

Our Marian, wonderful and again in yellow (the favorite colors of her party clothes), is to cheer up our romantic hearts. But the romance between these two, although obvious to us, is not necessarily what is in Julian Fellowes’ plans. Last season, Marian fell in love with the suspicious and self-serving Tom Raikes (Thomas Cocquerel) and Larry had no romantic interest.
Raikes, as we know, almost cost Marian her reputation and left her in a dangerous situation by convincing her to run away with him and leaving her waiting while he left her for a richer candidate. Marian asked Larry for help, who was going to deliver the letter to her aunts informing them of the plan, but ended up being her accomplice when she needed to omit the story, especially from Agnes (Christina Baranski).

Larry saw Marian crying, he danced with her not just a waltz, but the whole night of the most talked about ball in New York. They separated as friends but as confidants. Earlier, thanks to Marian’s advice, Larry faced his parents and decided to become an architect. Neither Bertha (Carrie Coon) nor George (Morgan Spector) were happy, but, even if indirectly, Marian helped George and win his legal case, for now, she is loved in the family. Will it continue?
There are opponents on both sides in the second season. Raikes may have gotten married and left the story for now, but Larry will have an affair with the widow Susan Blane (Laura Benanti) and Marian will be courted by Agnes’ widowed nephew, Dashiell Montgomery (David Furr).

The promos already suggest that Larry’s involvement with Susan will generate scandal and irritation for Bertha, who wants to choose the best partners for her children: people with names, money, and titles. Nothing that helps Marian, we can fix it. No true love to convince Bertha, that marriage is business.
The pressure for Marian to accept Dashiell’s court will be strong, even from Agnes, who will see the union of the two as a unique opportunity for the young woman to have a safe and even happy life. Agnes would be against Larry because he was “new money” and, as stated, Bertha would be against Marian because she was “without money”.
How are we in the game? Cheering, cheering, and cheering!
