The series Slow Horses is always one of the highlights of the year for me, ever since 2020. An adaptation of Mick Herron‘s books, reaches its third season with a fine-tuned cast, led by Gary Oldman and with precise humor, reversing the expectations of what we usually expect from English spies. Yes, as I mentioned a few years ago, it’s almost an anti-James Bond franchise.
The cayuses, or, the Slow Horses, are – in theory – the problematic or incompetent employees of MI5 – however, under the command of the insufferable Jackson Lamb (Oldman), who heads the Slough House (in English it sounds like Slow) always shine brighter than the supposedly best prestigious agents of British intelligence. They even managed to prevent a terrorist attack in London in the second season.

We will meet them again now with an even greater risk. According to the official synopsis, a romantic liaison in Istanbul threatens to expose a buried MI5 secret in London. When Jackson Lamb and his team of misfits are drawn into the fight, they find themselves embroiled in a conspiracy that threatens the future of not just Slough House, but MI5 itself. And, from the trailer, we know that it’s even worse, dissatisfied MI5 agents rebel, kidnap Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves) and conveniently the scoundrels are the ones chosen to resolve the situation. Obviously, they can’t trust anyone, least of all Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott-Thomas) or least of all Ingrid Tearney (Sophie Okonedo).
After the loss of Olivia Cooke, who was briefly in the first season and left to join the cast of House of the Dragon, the same will happen with the irritating antagonist Freddie Fox, the irritating James “Spider” Webb, who also went to same HBO series. But we will see the excellent Jack Lowden again as River Cartwright, once again being the perfect foil for Gary Oldman‘s acidity.
In this third season, we will also have new names: Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù as Sean Donovan, the former head of security at the British embassy in Istanbul, and Katherine Waterston as Alison Dunn, an MI5 agent who discovers a dark secret at the heart of the agency. Premieres in 20 days! And the other good news is that the fourth season is guaranteed, it will be the adaptation of the fourth novel, Spook Street. It’s to celebrate
