Did anyone know about Peter Barnes in The Gilded Age?

The war of egos between Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) and Enid Turner-Winterton (Kelley Curran) heats up with each episode of The Gilded Age and now that Bertha “stole” the Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb) from Enid (I love calling Turner by first name!), the former chambermaid is plotting her revenge. In style.

According to the trailer for episode 5, we will again fly between Newport and New York, at a speed that is still surprising to me in times of carriages. Of course, there were already trains, but still, it’s a trip of more than three hours by car in the 21st century, so it wouldn’t be as frequent as it has been in the HBO Max series. But that’s okay! As we know, Bertha invited the Duke to stay with them in the resort town in Rhode Island and will receive some guests for a dinner and ball in honor of the English nobleman.

For actress Kelley Curran, Enid still has a crush on George Russell (Morgan Spector), and when she offered to be her lover, she knew that the position would bring no “gains”. I disagree! Her biggest anger driver now was her failure to separate the power couple. “It would be difficult to live under the same roof as George Russell and not develop feelings for him,” she said in an interview, she also likes the fact that Turner has a good relationship with her husband who, even without knowing about his wife’s past, defended her by picking a fight with Caroline Astor (Donna Murphy). The most interesting thing about the interview is what the actress highlights: Enid may have tried to pull off a coup but ended up getting a love marriage.

Look, at this point, I’m surprised that Enid hasn’t thrown in the towel on her unsuccessful mission to beat Bertha. She failed in the very aggressive seduction of George (Morgan Spector), who wasn’t even tempted the two times she visited him naked in her room. That’s because he really loved his wife. Afterwards, when she threw the secret in her ex-boss’s face, all she could see was that the couple didn’t even flinch. But Enid had two advantages that were dear to Bertha: a box at the Academy of Music (thanks to her husband) and access to the Duke of Buckingham, whom she met on a trip to England. In a single night, Bertha won both victories without much effort. The box apparently was a coincidence, as everyone saw that Enid was a chambermaid so anyone could have alerted Caroline Astor (Donna Murphy), who canceled access to the theater for Mrs. Winterton. She, of course, thinks it was Bertha. We do not know.

When removing the Duke from the Wintertons’ intimacy, Bertha said that she herself would inform the couple of her change of plans. And so she did, with an article in the newspaper, which made Enid lose control. “I don’t want other dukes, I want this duke! We found him and he’s mine! But that witch stole it from me.” Yes, you can imagine that revenge will be evil.

And who will help her? Peter Barnes (Michael Farrell). Who?

Well, we hadn’t paid attention to him until the second episode of the second season, when he exchanged glances with Turner on her first visit to the Russells in New York. He was also the one who told his colleagues downstairs how she managed to marry a rich widower. By watching the promo we know he will help Enid in her mission to publicly shame Bertha Russell. From the trailer, will it have to do with the soup that will be served for dinner? Is he going to spill it on Bertha? Or in the Duke?

Look, even though Kelley talks about a marriage of love since Peter and Enid are more than just friends… am I right?
