Chemical transformation: a curious combination

I have to open with my disclaimer that I’m bothered by Brie Larson‘s lack of versatility, whether in the roles she chooses or even less in the way she approaches them. She is always robotic, irritated, and arrogant. This made Elizabeth Zott a curious character, as her transformative journey didn’t always convince us, but it was interesting.

The conclusion of Lessons in Chemistry was sweet, with surprises and a transformative arc of pure love, where romantic souls could sigh. With a certain element of Ghost, the series would be about Elizabeth’s difficulties in the sexist academic universe, but in fact what was most interesting was her meeting and love with fellow chemist Calvin Evans (Lewis Pullman), whose tragic life surpasses any drama faced by Elizabeth. It was from this joining of two almost autistic souls that an unlikely story of transformation came.

We are left without knowing anything about Elizabeth’s own trajectory, other than the fact that she was sexually abused in the past, but Calvin was a suffering orphan, a genius whose premature death deprived him of everything he wanted: a family. It was his daughter with Elizabeth that leads us and the mother to discover more about her father, and the fact that at this point Elizabeth is a huge TV star is almost irrelevant. Even though she has problems socializing, she is driven to connect with people. A story of positivity and hope that reached its conclusion almost discreetly, quietly on Apple TV Plus platforms. Nothing exceptional, but cute.
