When Ian McKellen was Nosferatu

In 1988, the British band Pet Shop Boys was at their global peak, having exploded a mere five years earlier and collecting first places with their second album, Actually. One of the most popular singles is the now classic, Heart, whose video is one of the group’s most famous.

In fact, a large part of Actually‘s collection was almost the ‘leftover’ from Please, the debut album. At this point, Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant‘s concerns were maintaining the upward momentum. Heart, however, was not for them. At the same time, the most famous artist in the world was Madonna who was working on her third album, which would be True Blue. The pair were commissioned to write a song for another artist and eventually went on to be considered for the American star. From this mission came Heart. With this information it is possible to understand why it is a slightly different piece from their other hits, do you agree?

Ultimately, Neil and Chris decided to ‘stick with’ the song themselves, a wise decision. Heart, which was born as Heartbeat, is a love song but obviously being by Pet Shop Boys it’s anything but that. While Chris never found it up to par with the duo’s other hits, Neil likes the sincerity of the lyrics. The most interesting thing was when it came time to make the video, as tradition demanded, creativity was expected and they did not disappoint. Heart‘s story became an updated version of Nosferatu, the classic 1922 film.

The production took the duo to Slovenia, in a castle where Nosferatu – speaking the words of the song – falls in love with Mina. The most curious thing is that who else would be the most perfect vampire? None other than Sir Ian McKellen brought the humor to a version of the seductive count. Given the actor’s award-winning and prestigious career, it would be easy to “forget” this small role, but he didn’t do that and has already posted his “Nosferatu” as one of the villains he played

And he’s so much fun. Have you seen? It is worth it!
