Frasier: where emotion hides in laughter

The brilliance of the Frasier series is a legend among American sitcoms. Its bold return so many years later, on a platform where the cheer formula and organic humor are not seen as good motivators, maintains the character’s standout spirit. The first season was relatively lame, as it greatly missed Niles and Martin, who could not be adequately replaced, but, behold, in the penultimate episode of this season, our hearts sank and the fans were moved, understanding that Frasier would always be our favorite psychologist.

The position of this return is that, after so many years away from his son, who stayed in Boston with his mother, Frasier returns to the East Coast to visit him, extending his stay in an almost invasive way by getting a job at Harvard and buying the building where Freddy lives, kind of indirectly forcing him to live with him. Full of quirks, with the same sarcasm as always, we have an elderly Frasier, but still perfect. Their scene partners try hard, but the young people are still very theatrical, with too clearly marked pauses and a lack of naturalness that we slowly hope they will overcome. Because Frasier, and sitcoms in general, resemble theater and have pace, stage maturity requires experience as well as talent. Nothing that makes the current season bad, but it still doesn’t live up to its reputation.

There is an emotional detail that Kelsey Grammer knows how to carefully explore and it is the absence of Martin, whose death of actor John Mahoney was built into the plot perfectly. Frasier’s dynamic with Freddy reflects the one he experienced with Martin, but an emotional Grammer brings us the depth he feels and how much it is justified to complete the character’s arc. In the first season of Frasier, the original, Martin is forced to live with his son because he can no longer live alone and that’s something that deeply displeases them both. The adaptation of the relationship between father and son generated many economic, as well as emotional, situations and at the end of the day, one knew that he would no longer be far from the other. With Freddy, he hopes, it might become the same thing.

Therefore, one episode away from the conclusion, we finally have an even clearer proposal before our eyes, which is to follow Frasier Crane’s last act, where he can reflect and finally improve as a person, always making us laugh in the process, of course. I can follow along!
