The intelligent simplicity of Slow Horses

Perhaps the highest cost of Slow Horses is the cast. And it’s proof that you don’t need big scenes, explosions, or exoticism to tell an excellent spy story, or have fancy explanations to justify the adventure. A simple ambition, envy, and bad character already advance stories that are still complex, coherent, fun, and most of all, surprising. An anti-team, a team of ‘failures’ that saves the day and entertains us. A series that thankfully has many books to sustain several seasons!

As we saw in the first episodes, this time Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) is in the middle of MI5’s political war, but having his “luck” he also ends up being the pivot of something bigger. Lucky for England because he’s effectively the best spy on duty, even though he’s a walking scumbag, he pretends not to care and keeps his mind so sharp that no one outsmarts him.

Anyone who didn’t pay attention to Diana Taverner’s (Kristin Scott Thomas) reaction to seeing a desperate River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) breaking into MI5 now understands: until now, it was all part of a security test – which MI5 failed – and Diana He was loving, as he said, watching the circus burn down. Diana, in all her class and apparent slowness, is the most fun antagonist Lamb could have: the opposite and still the same. Intelligent and acerbic, she was seeing her enemies suffer and possibly ensuring her promotion. She hasn’t made it yet, but she’s a rattlesnake.

The turnaround came with violence and some goodbyes. The test was a success (for those who wanted to discredit Ingrid Tearney’s (Sophie Okonedo) management), but the false kidnapping of Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves) is now real and Lamb is ahead of everyone and is already deciphering the alternatives for solving it. the impasse while others are still dizzy with the speed of the events. Obviously, Diana is also connected. Do you know who didn’t care or paid dearly? “Spider” Webb (Freddie Fox) is the irritating and incompetent agent who destroyed River’s career and who was once again at the heart of the conflict. Well… not anymore. As we know, Freddie is in the cast of House of the Dragon and his participation in Slow Horses has come to an end.

So, friends, now we are dealing with the problem of the Slow Horses season and the chess game between Diana and Lamb will have new strategies. Who doesn’t love that?
