A complex crime to solve: theories

For those who like whodunit – and you know I’m part of this community – A Murder at the End of the World is a gem. We reach the fifth episode and in each one, the tension is so well built that there is still no way to decipher the motive for the crimes and who the killer is. Who doesn’t want to be challenged like that?

Additionally, Emma Corrin shines as Darby Hart, the young amateur and techie detective who is invited to a billionaire’s retreat in Iceland and sees her ex-boyfriend and love of her life, Bill, murdered, needing to decipher who killed him while other deaths are multiplying. Shall we try some theories?

Identity

The most popular theory on social media is a tribute to the 2003 film Identity, where a series of murders in an isolated motel were nothing more than the delirium of a man trapped in a mental hospital.

As the narrative is not linear, there is still the issue that at some point Darby was attacked by the psychopath Silver Doe – with Bill – and the last image we have is dark, with the sound of a gunshot. After that, we are in the “present”, where she is alone and receives the invitation. It’s possible, but I don’t believe the showrunners came to the same conclusion because it would be plagiarism. I don’t like it if they are there, but there isn’t that much originality in the world either. The illuminated

Another film where crimes and strange things happen in an isolated hotel is The Shining and showrunner Brit Marling mentioned that they used a lot of visual things from the classic A Murder at the End of the World. However, the entire “spiritual evil” side that drives the plot of Stanley Kubrick’s film is nullified by the technology that is the protagonist of the series. What remains, as Identity, would be a person tormented by external influence, but I repeat: I think it’s unlikely.

1001: Space Odyssey

Returning to Kubrick’s references, it is impossible to forget that the 50-year-old film featured Artificial Intelligence as an antagonist. HAL interferes in every mission and kills anyone he considers a threat. Obviously, there is a STRONG possibility that something could be mirrored in the Star Plus series, as AI Ray is “helping” Darby in the investigation. Are you really?

Noah’s Ark

Some bet that the end of the world is so imminent, or that it has already happened, that the test and dispute are about who will have the chance to stay in Andy Ronson’s bunker. It can justify other things, like the isolation and the snowstorm, but not exactly the crimes that are happening. Let’s remember that Bill discovered something, had told Rohan, and was going to tell her. Rohan even sent Morse code messages to someone – one down, another on the way – but then my first suspect, Sian, also died. Someone is threatening Darby and apparently tried to drown her in the heated pool.

Let’s think: AI Ray may still be involved, but there is someone who physically attacked Darby, so whoever is doing the killing still has something to hide.

Sixth Sense

Some theories suggest that Darcy is like Bruce Willis‘ character in The Sixth Sense. Her soul wanders around wanting to help solve crimes, but in fact, she was murdered by the serial killer with the silver ring. I do not know…

A retired hacker?

There are several aspects of the most obvious suspects: Andy and Lee, and, precisely for this reason, they have been ruled out. At that moment, finally, the suspiciously helpful Lee caught Darby’s attention. Lee has a son with Bill, claims she doesn’t have time to hack like she used to, is against what her rich husband symbolizes, and has an Argentine passport that we don’t know if it’s fake or if “Lee” is fake. But now our detective is scared of her.

While we’re here, let’s talk about Andy. Yes, he has motives, and means and is ultra-suspicious in his attitude and plans. It would be a lazy alternative…

Who is the serial killer?

In flashbacks, we follow Bill and Darby’s romance as they chase a serial killer, and after being attacked by him, they separate. The sentence that opens the series is with Darby saying that a killer’s first victim is – in general – the person closest to him. The Silver Doe killer is still a mystery, but we will certainly discover it at the same time as the current killer, this connection could promise us a surprise. I swear, I can’t think of “which one,” but we clearly will.

Some suggest that Darby’s father could be the serial killer: her mother “disappeared”, the killer smells like formaldehyde and she had a wedding ring from one of the victims.
