My God. The rush, the irresponsibility with classic content, and the blatant intention of surfing the wave of algorithms DESTROYED any chance of relevance or even coherence in The Buccaneers. The end of the first season – yes, it is so bold that it leaves open the possibility of continuing – was confusing and hysterical like the previous episodes. A shame for Apple TV Plus and content that clashes with its notorious collection quality.
The excessive modernity that they inserted into the plots and characters took away any possibility of connection, making us wonder if Edith Wharton is turning in her grave.

Nan, the fake shy who loves a leading role, through her narcissistic insensitivity transformed her fiancé Theo, the Duke who only supported and loved her, into an antagonist for whom she has contempt and no care. She arrives late at the engagement party (how can you have Nan on the scene if she isn’t entering and exiting the room slamming doors?), with a frown turning Theo’s life into a nightmare. She had every opportunity to leave without fanfare, but how would she miss this opportunity?
Guy, the fake guy who left her when he found out she was illegitimate and is now the “perfect man”, comes back to have his friend’s early wedding night, but then Jinny invades the room in the morning asking for help to escape from her husband and Nan, the “selfless” one, “sacrifices herself” because if she is a Duchess, no one will be able to mess with her family. This has another name, people. SCAMMER. She does so by almost attacking poor Theo, who has no alternative after he gets involved with this selfish, farm-house madwoman. As we end the season about to discover “Nan’s real mother,” which is Mrs. Testvalley, I’m sure, we’re asking ourselves: so what? Nan doesn’t care about anything or anyone other than herself, her biological mother or adoptive mother are the same thing for her and us.

There isn’t anything useful among her hysterical friends either: Lizzy unconditionally supports her gay sister (this is far-fetched for the period, but cute), and Conchita and Charles, the couple representing Meghan and Harry, send his family to hell…. and go to, I kid you not, “financial independence” for both of them in America, where they can be free. Why haven’t they been yet? Conchita waits for him to break up with everything and everyone to tell him not to count on her contribution – Dad lost all his money – and either because of the scare or because there’s no way now, he shrugs. If things were that simple at the beginning of the 19th century, I don’t understand how we got to the 21st without greater advances. That’s right, it’s ridiculous like that.
My wish? The cancellation of this crime against literature and our intelligence. The second season could come just as well in 2033, no one expects it sooner anyway. Spare us please (pun fully intended)
