Alcione’s wishes for 2024

As published in CLAUDIA

Singer Alcione is a legend in Brazilian popular music, with her powerful voice and a rich discography spanning more than five decades. However, at 76 years old, she is making an unexpected debut: by invitation from Disney, she is one of the Brazilian voice actresses for the animation Wish, which premieres on January 4th in national cinemas.

Wish follows the story of Asha, a young woman who lives in the magical kingdom of Rosas who, in addition to having empathy with the people and the place where she lives, is always optimistic above all else. However, when in a challenging moment she decides to make a wish, she achieves something unusual: the Star she made the wish for not only answers it but connects with Asha with a cosmic force of unlimited strength. Together, she and Star will do everything to save Rosas and prove that incredible things can happen.

To my surprise, of all the Disney characters, Alcione’s favorite is very different from the one she plays in the animation, but it’s just confirmation that she always surprises us. In common? Marrom shares her wisdom on how to place orders…

CLAUDIA: How did this invitation to voice a character come about? And did you face this challenge?
ALCIONE: I received a phone call and, at first, I was a little like that. Because I never worked in this area, right? Then I said, “let’s go because with me there’s no mystery”. I have to see it to believe it. And thank God everything worked out. [laughter]

CLAUDIA: Is it more difficult to dub or sing?
ALCIONE: More difficult to dub. Singing for me is easier.

CLAUDIA: I imagine because dubbing requires having the inflection and precision to match the voice with the image. What was it like to ‘learn’ this?
ALCIONE: It became easier the moment I started to become more familiar with the subject, with the character, and then it became easier, thank God. I was happy not to have encountered so much difficulty!

CLAUDIA: Without giving spoilers for those who haven’t seen it yet, how could we describe your character?
ALCIONE: No spoilers, I don’t know [laughs] because I’m the mother tree. It’s a tree, Mom, and it speaks well. It speaks to that whole area, and I think I fit the character.

CLAUDIA: Why?
ALCIONE: Because she’s bossy, right? [laughter]

CLAUDIA: It’s so cool to be in a Disney animation, I mean, you’ll be immortalized in this animation for so many generations who will be listening to you later, right. Did you have any characters from the Disney universe that you liked the most? A favorite?
ALCIONE: I always really liked Daisy. She only rules the high heels, the loop. She is very chic. She is what do you say? She knows things. Daisy. Daisy, it’s me! [laughter].

CLAUDIA: I can’t escape: have you ever made a wish that came true?
ALCIONE: I believe in God and he has never failed me. I belong to the family that God placed for me on this Earth and placed me to sing, which is what gives me joy. I make a living from what I do, and people still pay me for it. God is great, isn’t he?

CLAUDIA: And in the Disney universe, making a wish is always an important message. What is the secret of having a wish fulfilled and what does Wish reinforce?
ALCIONE: We have to be careful with what we want, be careful with what we want. That’s why when I really want something, I ask for it to come with God’s grace. Sometimes you have so much of something and it doesn’t come to do you any good, so ask it to come with God’s grace. This desire is good.

CLAUDIA: And if you had to make a wish now, make a wish that we could know about, after all, normally a wish is our secret. If you could make one wish that could be fulfilled, what would it be?
ALCIONE: Oh, Jesus. I think my biggest wish today is for the war in the East to end. It makes me uneasy, to see how much those people are suffering, how they are killing themselves. This has to end, I would ask God to really allow this war to end.
