Are we being too harsh on Rebel Moon?

Since becoming a signature, Zack Snyder‘s productions have aroused anger and passion. No one doubts his visual signature, but it’s fun to think that someone also demands script depth. Snyder is a fan of adventure, and instant emotional impact and stands out in his niche. The launch of Rebel Moon, his new franchise, was met with a barrage of criticism that forgot the concept of “popcorn movies” that Generation X experienced in childhood. For Millennials who grew up with the trilogy craze, it failed. Are we being too harsh?

I love George Lucas and Peter Jackson, who made iconic trilogies, but even they fell victim to the formula, used greedily by the studios. The Star Wars saga, for example, has grown so much that not even its original hero has an impact on the universe that has several products. Inconsistency is the signature of the franchise, something that no one can destroy. Rebel Moon – A Child of Fire is the first part of three films, a story that brings together Star Wars, Dune, The Witcher, The Avengers, and Game of Thrones, the most obvious sources from the beginning. A fantasy universe, of cliché villains and tormented heroes. There’s the 300 jump (remember it was Michael Fassbender who was the first one?) and the popping colors. It’s all there and it’s fun for a few hours, why complain?

The leader of the rebels is the badass Kora (Sofia Boutella, great in the adventure role), a young woman with a mysterious past and incredible battle skills. She lives in a peaceful colony of farmers on the Moon, but her tranquility is threatened when the tyrannical regent Balisarius (Fra Fee) sends the cruel Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein) to dominate the place. They arrive there after discovering that local farmers have sold crops to the insurgent Bloodaxe brothers (Cleopatra Coleman and Ray Fisher). Kora sets out to find a team that will undertake the suicide mission of defending her planet and with that, the adventure begins.

Kora is accompanied by farmer Gunnar (Michiel Huisman), who accidentally caused the incident. Aided by pilot and hitman Kai (Charlie Hunnam), the legendary General Titus (Djimon Hounsou), the swordswoman Nemesis (Doona Bae), the ex-slave Tarak (Staz Nair), and Milius (E. Duffy) they fight for their lives and innocents.

Rebel Moon arrived on Netflix this week. Yes, it is a combination of formulas that are exhaustively used left and right, it will continue in May 2024 and does not respond to any of its equal sources. Can it still work? Yes, but expectations have to be firmly on the ground, nothing to raise to the stars. So I go against the grain: it’s good, it’s just not brilliant. Who wants to philosophize with intergalactic adventures?
