In chess, the Queen is the most powerful piece, and unlike the other pieces, she can move in any direction and as many squares as she wants, but she cannot jump any other piece. If captured, the game is over. And Slow Horses features the two MI5 queens using their pawns, knights, bishops, and kings in a tense and vital game. Only one will remain on the board. With Sophie Okonedo and Kristin Scott Thomas, it’s breathtaking.

The third season of Slow Horses ends before the turn of 2024 and brought a more limited argument if we want to be honest and direct. Now we know that the action was initiated by a calculating Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas), who, to become the head of MI5, currently occupied by Ingrid Tearney (Sophie Okonedo), schemed a series of actions that would bring down not only Ingrid but all your opponents. It (still) didn’t work out, but partly because she knew it would never be too easy. The game is not over yet.

The plan was to throw a stumbling block in Ingrid’s path, a decision she made years earlier in Istanbul which reveals how the head of British espionage is as dangerous, or even more so, than Diana herself. This is the basis of everything that moves the eight episodes of the third season, this chess game between intelligent women whose personal ambitions put their sisterhood and the lives of innocent people at risk. Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) knows this, but for a change, River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) enters the mix without realizing what is happening, disrupting everything.

In episode 7 the tension increased irreversibly. Sitting in front of an imaginary board, Diana and Ingrid finally open the game and try to take each other down without mercy. At the moment, the two antagonists are unworthy of empathy: Ingrid has isolated the players in a suicidal situation, ordering everyone to be killed and laughing at Diana, who has to rely on the “incompetent” scoundrels at Slough House to have a chance. Ingrid underestimates Lambe. her team, but Diana doesn’t. She doesn’t like them, but just like us, she knows that because the gangsters are led by Lamb, who always defends his team, it’s easy to decide who to bet on.

In this way, the action moves because a few years ago, Ingrid ordered the death of an agent who was going to reveal an operation that went wrong. This agent’s ex-boyfriend wants revenge and Diana, without getting directly involved, is allowing him access to the feared documents that could end the MI5 chief’s career. So Lamb has finally managed to understand what is happening, but he is also surrounded and in danger of dying. The final episode will be bloody and tragic. We’re ready for the final move
