Kate Winslet: Scary and charismatic in The Regime

The miniseries The Regime, originally The Palace, is only expected to premiere on HBO Max in March, another consequence of the date changes caused by the writers’ and actors’ strikes in 2023, but the teaser shows us how deliciously evil we will meet Kate Winslet again. And does Kate Winslet shine in any role, as an antagonist? It’s going to blow up.

The series has been rescheduled for March 3, 2024, and Kate is the chancellor of an unnamed European country. From what we saw in the teaser, an American envoy (Martha Plimpton) is suspicious and disturbed, but offers “her full support”, as long as the chancellor, who doesn’t like what she hears, shows “credibility” and “reliability”. It is the beginning of what is described as “the journey of an authoritarian regime and its imminent demise”, seen from within the palace walls.

The political satire that finds the Chancellor (Winslet) doing literally everything to increase her dominance before her political kingdom collapses was written by Will Tracy, author of The Menu, and is directed by Stephen Frears (Dangerous Liaisons and The Queen) and Jessica Hobbs (The Crown). In other words, we will have the best of the best, in front of and behind the cameras. The cast, in addition to the star herself, features big names who have won or been nominated for Emmys and Oscars: Andrea Riseborough, who is the palace manager; Martha Plimpton, the United States Secretary of State who works to preserve American interests in the fictional European country; Hugh Grant, the opposition leader who is arrested and sparks a popular reaction, and Matthias Schoenaerts, the Chancellor’s right-hand man (and perhaps something more?)

The Regime hasn’t even been released yet and is already emerging as one of the favorites for the 2024 Emmys. That’s because Kate Winslet always reigns supreme. Looking forward to March soon! There will only be six episodes, but they promise to keep us in suspense until the end.
