The Slow Horses series team’s luck, more than being based on Mick Herron‘s eight books, was having Apple TV Plus’ approval to continue with the production of two more seasons while the second was still beginning to air. Today the scenario would not be so favorable.

Another positive factor is that the seasons are recorded consecutively, with the entire cast delivering two stages of the story each time. This “cheapens” costs and maintains continuity. Although those who haven’t read the books won’t know the conclusion of the current season (it only ends on Wednesday), I wouldn’t bet on Ingrid Tearney (Sophie Okonedo) winning, she’ll fall through. And those in the know caught the teaser that Ingrid gave to Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott-Thomas), warning that if she falls, it doesn’t mean that Diana is her replacement, but rather “a man”. He will play Claude Whelan, James Callis‘ character. But we will meet another person from Diana, Lamb, and David Cartwright’s past: Frank Harkness, the role that will bring Hugo Weaving to the cast of Slow Horses.

As Slow Horses is following the book’s publication order, the fourth season should be based on the fourth book, Spook Street. In it, the story begins with a bombing that “will detonate personal secrets, shaking the already unstable foundations of Slough House”. We know of some, revealed in the second season that implicates Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), River Cartwright’s grandfather (Jack Lowden), David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce), and Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves), and as in the last episode of season three Lamb reveals some information to Standish, I bet we’ll get back to the Cold War in some way.

Another piece of information that will already have a connection is the advancement of David Cartwright’s dementia process, personally affecting River as his grandfather is the only family he can count on. In Spook Street, David’s dementia triggers some dangers when he forgets that there are secrets that should remain buried and therefore becomes the target of those who want to delete files. This deadly wave of destruction includes the bombing of a crowded mall, and with his grandfather under threat, River quits his administrative job and investigates everything himself. The worst decision, we know. As Lamb, who worked with David Cartwright, knows better than anyone that even in retirement David is not an innocent old man, he will do whatever he deems necessary to protect an agent in danger. And the scoundrels at Slough House re-evaluate what it means to be an MI5 agent.

Anyone who reads this book is expecting one of the most exciting seasons of the series. I already feel for River in advance, but I want the fourth season to come in the first half of the year. from2024. Waiting any longer will be torture!
