In 80 years, the Golden Globes have always been a somewhat different awards show in Hollywood. Organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, always a bit of a punching bag, the butt of jokes, many of which seemed somewhat xenophobic and prejudiced to me. However, as bribery and politicking scandals have accumulated over the years, when the Los Angeles Times investigation three years ago revealed that the organization had no black journalists among its members, with some being accused of making sexist and racist, in addition to soliciting favors from celebrities and movie studios, was kind of the last straw. Suspended, artists like Tom Cruise returned the awards they received in protest and the future seemed uncertain.

Then, in June 2023, Eldridge Industries purchased the Golden Globes’ assets from Dick Clark Productions (DCP), starting to manage the award show’s broadcast and transforming the Golden Globes into a for-profit venture. In 2024, 300 journalists from 75 countries will choose the winners, now with 60% racial and ethnic diversity disclosed. That’s right, it’s the “new” Golden Globes, opening the awards season in a “normal” scenario, without masks or distancing. The expectation is great.
The 81st edition of the award takes place on Sunday, January 7th.

Already giving a new look, the host is the American stand-up comedian of Filipino origin, Jo Koy, making his debut at events of this size. Also new are two new categories that include Best Stand-up Comedy Performance on TV and Cinematographic and Box Office Achievements. This last one is interesting because it could reinforce the favorite for Best Film in a unified way, as the Golden Globes separates Comedy/Musical from Drama. Or the winner may go ‘against’ the most popular for “Cinematic Achievement” is not always “Box Office Achievement”. Do you agree?

Other than that, the list of nominees isn’t obvious yet because the Golden Globes are the first, so it keeps the speeches and highlights on the red carpets fresh. By the time the Oscars arrive, we will be tired of seeing the same faces and hearing the same thanks, I guarantee it! But it’s worth checking the guesses and recognizing that there is no lack of inclusion in the party: two female directors nominated, ethnicities included and with a chance of winning, and so on. There are 27 artists nominated for the first time, a clear answer to any doubts.

That said, we are unlikely to have any underdogs. It’s Barbie night, from Succession, but probably history with the announced victory of Native American Lily Gladstone, the current favorite to win the award for Best Drama Actress for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon and Bradley Cooper remains the favorite to win best actor in a drama film for his role as Leonard Bernstein in Maestro, which he also directed. No one doubts that in the comedy category, Emma Stone will win the Golden Globes for Poor Things, but it seems that Paul Giamatti leads the competition for best actor in a comedy/musical film for The Holdovers.
