More changes at the 2024 Golden Globes: no looking back

Sunday we open the awards season with the ‘new’ Golden Globes (broadcast on TNT). And we’ve already made our guesses, we’ve already talked about the changes and it’s worth mentioning another difference that will undoubtedly be noticed. Unlike previous years or similar awards, we will not have two ‘traditional’ Awards for the party: no Cecil B. DeMille Award or Carol Burnett Award in 2024. That’s right!

The two awards select an artist for lifetime achievement, taking a break from the evening’s ‘veiled competition’ for a nostalgic moment, where the stars relax, get emotional and remember what it’s like to be part of and contribute to Hollywood legends. In 2023, Eddie Murphy and Ryan Murphy were honored. Does this mean that the Golden Globes eliminated the moment Hollywood loves most, talking about itself? Of course!

The absence of these two awards in 2024 was justified as temporary due to the change behind the scenes of the event, whose past required urgent adjustments. The curious thing is that the look at the past leaves, but two categories that praise the present come in: “Cinematic and Box Office Achievement” and “Best Stand-Up Performance on Television”. It never stops being curious.

The Cecil B. DeMille Award, which began to be distributed in 1952, had only been ignored for three years throughout the history of the Golden Globes: in 1976 and 2008, because of strikes in Hollywood and in 2022, when the event was not even held. televised due to the accusations that led to the changes that we will be witnessing in 2024. The focus was always on the contribution to Cinema while the Carol Burnett Award focused on TV, having only been created in 2019 and with the actress who today gives the statuette its name as the first winner. It has also not been delivered since then, in 2022.

The change may be temporary, as mentioned, but looking to the past has never been a feature appreciated by young people, even fewer millennials, so it has a direct impact on the night’s audience. Parading clips in long speeches by artists that the public on digital platforms is unaware of is actually a huge challenge. Personally, I really miss the lack of classic films and series in all the collections, material that is on the sidelines and that would help a lot if it were made available to those who love the Art of TV and Cinema. Don’t you think?

So, without looking back, the new Golden Globes signal how they are positioning themselves. For the future only.
