Tense and without chemistry: the Golden Globes returned in debt

The behind-the-scenes corrections, mentioned sparingly at the 2024 Golden Globes party, were essential for the event’s first steps on the long road to regaining popularity. Prestige did not seem to be threatened, as the artists showed up in force, although tense and staid in general. This weight proved to be an even greater challenge for the unknown Jo Koy who faced a room that even the biggest and happiest recognized as being “intimidating”. The comedian accepted the job after countless celebrities rejected it, something they must now be saying “thankfully” while Jo Koy is not having the best of his weeks.

Complaining or citing the constraints of the opening monologue or the presenter’s attempts to lead the evening is almost cruel, I won’t dwell on any of that. The format that all broadcasts insist on maintaining is old-fashioned, risky for the presenter, and always a guarantee of embarrassment for others. Managing to overcome Anne Hathaway and James Franco’s embarrassment at the 2011 Oscars seemed like an impossible mission, but now there’s a replacement. What I think is that there is no longer a need for a single master of ceremonies: due to the rhythm, the opportunity, and even coherence with the present day, where humor flirts with cancellation and exposes the stars who go there to drink, eat and win, not to become the butt of jokes. If they still think an anchor is needed, choose artists who are quick to trigger, like Robert Downey Jr., not a stand-up comic who can be slapped in the face or covertly booed like Jo Koy was. Taylor Swift’s look was the vignette from the band’s classic Heart: If Looks Could Kill.

Moving on from that, and from the cruel snub to Greta Gerwig, the Golden Globes party seemed without the lightness of previous years, with the stage in a new position (more central) which meant that the winners were almost always turning sideways to greet their tables and often not understanding how to go up when their name was announced. Other than that, the most embarrassing table was visible: Jared Leto, Joaquin Phoenix, and Nicholas Cage were barely speaking to each other, more than once Joaquin’s view was blocked by the cameramen in front of him and as soon as they could the three ran out of the party, leaving the table closest to the stage empty. Details that anyone who works with this notices.

In terms of fashion, all are impeccable, with almost no slippage among women (the same does not apply to men, whose black-tie restricts them to few options, and whoever dares to ‘break’ takes more risks. And they make mistakes, as we saw in 2024.

I was wildly wrong with some of my guesses, but in general, I love it when that happens. My main mistake, when I believed in Barbie‘s Pink Wave, was forgetting the impact of the Beef series, my favorite when it was made available, and believing in the undeniable success of Daisy Jones and the Six. Beef is and has always been the clear favorite, so we have to remember it when placing bets!

There was no room for doubt about the blockbuster that Succession would be in its drama categories, it is open to the new craze for 2025. The Crown also achieved the undeniable recognition of Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, with the actress having the identifiable ability to thank and mention everyone except the Royal Family or even the character, maintaining respect and distance from everything controversial in the series in the final phase. It wasn’t the last time we saw The Crown at the awards: the final season is still coming with the cast potentially nominated for next year. The warning is here!

On the Comedies side, it was strange to see that the Ted Lasso fever “passed”, as well as Abbot Elementary. It’s time for The Bear and it has only just begun. The victories of its main stars here at the Golden Globes were isolated because the award separates the main stars but in general it puts all the supporting stars in the same bag: it is much more competitive to win as a supporter than as a star. Just to put it into context, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Billy Crudup (The Morning Show) competed with the cast of Succession: and the defeat was expected.

Now that Anatomy of a Fall is directly threatening Barbie, the biggest disputes are still between Best Actor and Best Actress. Cillian Murphy won for Drama, but Paul Giamatti, reprising his partner with Alexander Payne, won for Comedy and there is still Jeffrey Wright in the running. I would say that Cillian’s victory cannot be ruled out, but it is not yet defined. Not at SAG or the Oscars. BAFTA is, we know.

Emma Stone has her popularity and recognition against her this year, go figure. Poor Things is as instigating in her proposal as Barbie was, as Emma’s character has been called the “feminist Frankenstein”. No one doubts the actress’s versatility or her strength in this campaign, but she comes up against having won an Oscar 7 years ago, perhaps very recently (although Hillary Swank won two in 5 years and Jodie Foster in just 3 years). What’s even more in her way is Lilly Gladstone‘s brilliant performance in Killer of the Flower Moon. As Lilly is young, from a minority, and will make History, Emma’s chances are reduced for the Oscar, which has a unified acting category. Lilly has been winning all the awards, it’s almost certain. It’s fair!

Therefore, the first awards ceremony of 2024 remained tepid, almost boring, because we will have few changes between nominees, winners, and speeches from January to March. On Wednesday, January 10th, we will have the nominees for the SAG Awards, which is the ultimate reference for where everything should go. What about the Golden Globes?

Well, the “errors” must be addressed, of course, but when it comes to format, I don’t have much hope. The absence of nostalgic awards effectively gave more rhythm to the broadcast, there was no chance of pausing for videos or applause or speeches from artists that the young audience didn’t even recognize. I would say that not having two more blocks for them would be listed among the successes, but seeing how they do it in 2025! The score for the night was 6.
