The wave of biopics in recent years has not lost steam and has consolidated some talents such as Rami Malek (who had already been successful on TV but won the Oscar for Bohemian Rhapsody) or Taron Egerton for Rocketman and Austin Butler as Elvis, to name a few. just three. The combination of music+biography+cinema is an old Oscar tradition (this year Bradley Cooper keeps the argument alive), so although we have barely taken our first steps in 2024, we can already say that Marisa Abela is a potential contender in 2025.

Signed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, who knew Amy personally and has made other biopics, such as John Lennon‘s Nowhere Boy, Back to Black will be faithful to the late singer and whoever saw the beautiful documentary, Amy, noticed that the trailer faithfully follows the that we saw of her off stage. The actress from the HBO series Industry seems to have incorporated Amy into her mannerisms and voice (is she dubbing?) and with the script written by Matt Greenhalgh (who repeats the duo with Taylor-Johnson), she relives the moments that the documentary left immortalized in our memory.
As it is a film, Back to Black goes further and in more detail will recount the early and accelerated rise of Amy Winehouse, with the weight of exposure she never wanted. Her fame came with the release of her album that gives the film its name, the innovative and emotional Back to Black, and we will see how the singer’s emotional fragility led her to a process of self-destruction that culminated in her death at the age of 27.

The world was surprised when the ‘unknown’ Marisa Abela, whose most prominent role was that of the rich and troubled Yasmin Kara-Hanani in Industry, was chosen to star in the production. Jack O’Connell and Leslie Manville are also in the cast. See the trailer.
