Three decades have passed between the original Top Gun and the second, but now that it’s become a global craze again, Tom Cruise won’t wait long. That’s right, in the same week that the star confirmed a partnership with Warner, the information that the script for the third Top Gun is in progress. That’s right, the Hollywood Reporter reported it and social media is in an uproar. As Cruise does not have exclusivity with the new studio, the ‘old’ one, Paramount, is the one investing in the clearly million-dollar project.

According to the magazine, Ehren Kruger, who signed Top Gun: Maverick, has been writing the script since October 2023 and director Joe Kosinski is also expected to return. Furthermore, the story will obviously reunite Tom Cruise with the two youngest stars of the franchise: Miles Teller and Glen Powell. Considering that they used the dynamic of Maverick (Cruise) versus Iceman (Val Kilmer), in which they started as antagonists, ended the original as friendly, and reached the sequel as ultra partners, it could be that the same thing happens with Rooster (Teller) and Hangman (Powell).

Maverick was a box office phenomenon in 2022, generating more than 1.5 billion dollars worldwide in a period when the saying was that “cinema was over”. Tom Cruise has been elevated to ‘savior’ status, with Steven Spielberg thanking him for it.

Apparently Maverick is really Tom’s good star, after all, he made him a star in 1986 and a hero in 2022. I have my reservations about returning to the plot so quickly, but the one who stands out for making the right decisions is always Tom Cruise, so I remain silent. The star does not usually rush the development of any project, so there is no prediction of any Top Gun in the short term. As THR highlighted, he is working on the eighth Mission: Impossible, scheduled for May 2025, so nothing before 2026 or even 2027, if the film announced to be literally shot in space doesn’t go ahead. That’s because stars, well, none shine as brightly as Tom Cruise’s.
