The anxiety of waiting for House of the Dragon

Waiting is not a common virtue in people, especially when the date is indefinite. Imagine the anguish of House of the Dragon fans given HBO Max’s vague position regarding the series’ return date?

The 1st season of the series, a prequel to Game of Thrones, was also highly anticipated, with photos of external scenes circulating on social media and a lot of speculation. Before debuting in August 2023, HBO Max had been equally elusive in 2022 as it is now.

The teaser confirmed the year, and then there was talk of ‘summer’ until, finally, it left the traditional month of April always marked the beginning of the previous series, for August 2023. Thus, it remained on the air until the end of October. We arrived in 2024 with the same ‘problem’.

The recordings of the new stage were not affected by strikes by writers and actors due to being in England (and Spain and Portugal), so fans could breathe a sigh of relief because – technically – there was a guarantee of a risk-free premiere in 2024, which was confirmed in the teaser released in December. The problem? HBO’s strategy of not announcing the exact date. What we know is that it comes in “summer 2024”.

Summer in the Northern Hemisphere begins in June and ends in August, so speculation began immediately. The broadcaster’s all-powerful, Casey Bloys suggests “at early summer”, which we understand as an allusion to the beginning of June. However, in a TV interview, actor Matt Smith confused hopefuls with the answer that he “thinks” the premiere will be in August. It makes sense if this is the “new” tradition, after all, House of the Dragon premiered on the last weekend of summer 2022, August 21st.

Semantics matters here: until the end of August, it is really summer in the United States, so HBO is keeping its word and if Matt Smith is right (of all of them he could have the most information), we will have to wait almost seven months yet.

House of the Dragon follows the plot of Fire and Blood, by George R.R. Martin, and is about to enter the bloodiest part of the civil war between the Targaryens. To add to the anticipation, the writer commented that he had seen the first two episodes and described them as “very dark.” In the distorted vocabulary of fans, it is synonymous with “very good”.

August or June? I’m going with the actor’s suggestion. Do you know why? Because he will be involved with the promotion of the season, if he said August it is because his schedule for that month must already be blocked for that. But we will only know when HBO Max releases a new trailer. This should not happen before April or May. (I hope I’m wrong!)

Do you know what’s left? Follow and speculate. Clear!
