Eva Marie Saint’s centenary

Generations that are not passionate about classic films do not associate the name Eva Marie Saint with big Hollywood stars, as the actress has always led a discreet life. However, in January 2024, she holds the record for being the oldest living actress who has won an Oscar and the oldest living actress. That’s right, alongside Marlon Brando, she was the winner in the Best Supporting Actress category in 1954 for On the Waterfront.

It’s a bit mean to admit, but Eva Marie Saint seemed like an alternative to Grace Kelly, her contemporary who retired from Hollywood when she married Prince Rainier and became the Princess of Monaco. For me, she is the star of my favorite Alfred Hitchcock film: North by Northwest, playing an anthological pairing with Cary Grant in a still sensational film.

Over more than seven decades, in addition to the Oscar, she won an Emmy, played Superman‘s mother, acted alongside cinema legends such as Paul Newman, Montgomery Clift, and Marlon Brando, and navigated dramas, epics, comedies, and superheroes. In July she turns no less than 100 years old, healthy, and is considered one of the last links in a golden period of cinema. A legend, truly.

Both International Intrigue and On the Waterfront celebrate important anniversaries in 2024: 65 years and 70 years, respectively. Close to the actress’s centenary, they obviously deserve to be reviewed and commented on! Coming soon to Miscelana.
