Truman Capote in film and TV

2024 marks both the centenary of Truman Capote‘s birth and his 40th anniversary of death. Capote was one of the most important American writers of the 20th century, with a precise and refined text, also scathing, and the inventor of the non-fiction genre. Author of classics such as In Cold Blood and Breakfast at Tyffany’s, he died at 59, after a few years in a self-destructive spiral that began in 1975, when he was working on what became his last book, Answered Prayers. Behind the scenes of this period is the theme of the Capote Versus The Swans series.

From everything we’ve seen in the trailers, Tom Hollander will either be highly criticized or highly praised (I’m betting on praise), and will certainly be nominated for many awards next year. With a unique physique, voice and gestures, Truman Capote published his first story when he was just 13 years old, but he loved celebrities, parties and fame. Often arrogant, he said he “always knew I wanted to be a writer and I wanted to be rich and famous.” Reaching his goal at age 23.

He became a character easily imitated, which is why so many actors avoided playing him. From recent years, two stand out: Toby Jones (who is physically adequate) in Infamous and, especially, Philip Seymour Hoffmann, who won the Oscar for Best Actor for playing him in Capote.

At the time of the film, in 2006, everyone was surprised by the choice of the actor to star in the film because Philip was tall and had a recognized deep voice. It was one of the most deserved Academy awards in recent times.

The StarPlus series, directed by Gus Van Sant, will show the period of the 1970s, when Truman spent more time at jet-set parties than working. Adored by rich and famous women, they confided in him intimate secrets, all of which were used in the book that humiliated them and led to its cancellation. The problem was that, as he was late in delivering Answered Prayers, he decided to allow Esquire magazine to publish excerpts from the unfinished novel. It was a catastrophic decision, especially after the publication of La Côte Basque 1965, which was why it was cancelled.

Then his problems with alcohol and drugs escalated and his general health deteriorated. He died still resentful of his friends who discarded him after the betrayal. Perfect material for a brilliant performance, do you agree?
