Since True Detective Night Country has spread Easter eggs and hints about what’s going on in Ennis, Alaska, we can now theorize about one of the several mysteries (or two of them) in the series. After all, we’re already more than halfway through the short season, heading into the 4th episode of 6.
What happened to activist Annie K (Nivi Pederson)? Basically, this is “THE” crime that our detectives have to solve even six years later. Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) met when Annie was murdered and fought during the investigation. For Peter Prior (Finn Bennett) this is the big mystery of the season and I’ll give my guess here: Liz and Evangeline had an affair and broke up because Liz didn’t want to leave her husband (and was having other affairs at the same time, with men).

There is an intimacy between them (Liz complains that Evangeline changed the place where she keeps the canned goods, so she was a regular at her colleague’s house), Liz confesses to her boss that their affair goes back to the days when she was “happily married”, so demonstrates that she had no problem with infidelity, and Liz asks Evangeline if she is now “dating men or dating women again.” Other than that, the two were discussing how and why people hide their private lives from others and how everyone knows everything anyway. Therefore, it was not just professional problems that the two had. And the child? As it appears to both of them, it is certainly their spiritual and emotional connection. Director Issa López herself said in an interview that it was a “love story between the two detectives”. Apparently, it will be literal.
Moving on, we return to Annie K., or Anne Masu Kowtok, who was found dead on the edge of the villages of Ennis six years ago, stabbed 32 times with a sharp, unidentified object. Navarro was the first on the scene and since the weapon was never found or the culprits identified, she is obsessed with it. To make things worse the body of the activist was kicked badly after she was already dead, as well as her was missing and was never recovered. A piece of information never disclosed to the public.

When the series was released, the trailer showed several spoilers, some of which had yet to appear in True Detective Night Country. One of them goes back to the scene we saw in episode 3, when Navarro goes to find his sister near the carcass of an old frozen ship. We see from the promo that the two detectives will return to the location and that there will be some connection with the investigation there. We also see that they will see barefoot footprints inside the laboratory or the abandoned ship, it is not clear.
At some point, the two will bump into another man wearing Annie’s coat, Navarro will disappear or fall into the frozen lake as we see Danvers screaming desperately for her and trying to break the ice, but we see who will actually fall into the depths of the freezing sea. It’s Liz Danvers.
None of this clarifies what happened to Annie, even though the images show that we will see Raymond Clark (Owen McDonnell) running away in the next episode, what is uncertain is whether it will be a flashback or something current. He goes down a hatch and it looks like it could be on an abandoned ship.

So here’s a theory (to be worked out in the still loose details): Annie knew that Ennis’s water was being contaminated by the mining company and asked Raymond for help in collecting evidence. This is because, through her boyfriend, she learned that Tsalal scientists managed to reach the bottom of what is below the Iceberg and there would be complete proof of the contaminated water.
What Annie was not aware is that there is a connection between the mining company and Tsalal (the Tutle family) who are searching for a dormant entity beneath the ice, an entity that brings the dead back to life, which can be both a weapon for science and for the occult cults they have a tradition for the southern family, linking whatever is in the water with the Yellow King or something. And the one in the water knows, which is why the spirit of Rust Cohle’s (Matthew McConaughey) father, Travis, knew where the bodies of the scientists were since he drowned himself years ago.

So it seems to me that the scientists, led by Anders Lund (Þorsteinn Bachmann), purposely awakened the entity, sacrificing Annie to do the resuscitation test or something like that. They cut out her tongue and threw her body near the Mining Company, to incriminate the men and make it appear that the murder was political. Raymond somehow felt guilty and when the entity “woke up”, he knew it would be Annie after the culprits and was running away.

Again, this theory is still a draft, I’m aware of it. But so far that’s what seems to have happened. Navarro’s mother must have been another local sacrifice in the past, which is why she and her sister are still at ‘risk’. It is necessary to be linked to the tradition of the local people to be able to resolve the issue and maybe Danvers’ stepdaughter can still help shortly.
The question now is… who is the zombie that appears in the trailer? It’s not Annie, she appears to be a white woman. And a separate comment… this entity loves to point a finger…
Do you have a different theory?
