When We Stop Observing: Death and Other Details

We are so fixated on finding out “who Victor Sims is” that we are failing to notice the details as Rufus Cotesworth (Mandy Patinkin) warned. Death and Other Details lack chemistry, and a definitive connection with the public, so although I’m following it week by week, I haven’t been posting here. I had already realized in the second episode that Sunil (Rahul Kohli) is far from being the good guy in the plot and that his ship, coincidentally brings together enemies and suspects on a Mediterranean cruise. Yes, until now I believed that he was the very dangerous “Victor Sims”, but, as we have reached the halfway point of the season making this practically explicit, we can now look for a new suspect.

While on the SS Varuna Cotesworth isn’t happy with who confessed to the murder, on land we see Sunil winning over the vulnerable Imogene Scott (Violett Beane). As a bonus, we have a tour of the beautiful city of Malta (which we can recognize from the 1st season of Game of Thrones) and clearly Imogene is distracted enough to give up the only evidence that would link Sims to her mother’s murder because she is falling in love with Sunil.

Of all the tips we have had so far that suggest that Sunil – all the time talking about his financial problems – the main one is to be the least interested in the two billionaire families that are on board. That said, another strong tip is to be the clumsy, loser, and good-hearted guy, who gradually gains Imogene’s trust.

Remembering that the proposed plot begins with the murder of an intruder on the trip, but the cruise is to celebrate the farewell of millionaire Lawrence Collier, owner of a textile empire, about to announce that his daughter, Anna, will take over as the new CEO. In fact, the occasion is to close a 3 billion dollar deal with the Chun family, owner of a fast fashion empire. There is more connecting the two families, as we learn, but the main thing is precisely what they can gain from the suspicious death of the nosy passenger who turns up dead.

It turns out that Imogene, Anna’s best friend, also suspects that the killer is the same person responsible for her mother’s death 12 years earlier when she was working with the Colliers. In fact, Victor Sims is a kind of Keyser Soze, no one sees him but is scared of him and acts as he wants. We reach the revelation at the end of the 5th episode that the SS Varuna is, in fact, the place where Sims acts without arousing suspicion, so the thesis that Sunil is him seems confirmed. If we had a series of six episodes, it would be a big turning point, but we can wait longer because we still have five more episodes to go. Honestly, it’s already more than completed, but in the absence of content, let’s embark on this journey.
