Mixed memories and a crime: Violent tourism in Australia

At the turn of the year 2000, Christopher Nolan had great success with a wonderful noir, Memento, where the hero seeks revenge for his murdered wife, but suffers from a dysfunction where he only has memory of the last 10 minutes, returning to square one each time. , needing to leave notes for himself to know who he is and who he needs to kill. The film is brilliant.

The BBC series The Tourist, available on Netflix since the beginning of the month, uses a similar thesis to take us on a six-episode journey where anxiety is the guiding thread of the story. We follow a man (Jamie Dornan) chased by a truck in the Australian desert, who, after an accident, wakes up in hospital with no memory.

Helped by a good-hearted police officer (Danielle Macdonald), he soon realizes that whoever he was left a trail of violence that is now back to collect interest and monetary correction. Without knowing his own identity, it is even more difficult to understand what is happening and escape what is coming towards him.

When it was shown in England, in 2022, The Tourist was a great success, which guaranteed the continuation – that’s right – a second part, which will premiere soon on the platform. In this first one, at every moment there is a twist (they are well constructed) and when everything starts to make sense, the story takes on another perspective.

Not since he achieved international fame when he starred as a pedophile psychopath in The Fall has James Dornan had a role where he was so good. He and Danielle have chemistry and it’s easy to root for the unusual couple.

In the second stage of the story, we will leave Australia and go to Ireland, where the couple continues trying to decipher his past.

Worth every minute!
