At the reunion of the cast of The Gilded Age at the SAG Awards, much of the cast was unrecognizable to most of us. In particular, our favorite couple: Larrian, or rather Larry Russell (Harry Richardson) and Marian Brooks (Louisa Jacobson).

Filming for the third season hasn’t started yet, which means that to find out what happens after the kiss we’ll have to wait until 2026! Obviously, the cast was bombarded with questions on the SAG Awards red carpet and Louisa Jacobson teased us: “I think Season 3 will just be a continuation of the same delicious drama,” Jacobson told Us Weekly. “That’s what I hope!”, she added.
For fans of the first hour, the series was an immediate success, but, in fact, it was now in the second that it gained pace and expanded the audience, something that the entire cast recognizes and is grateful for. And we said goodbye with many doubts and dramas – how did she define it? Oh! delicious – in development, including the beginning of the romance between neighbors Larry and Marian, friends and confidants, both with disappointments in love and with all the faces that will leave tears in the past. It will be?

Will Marian be badly spoken of?
In the theories that we can draw for the two, although perfect for each other, it seems to me that nothing will be that easy. As Agnes (Christine Baranski) warned her niece, there were two unsuccessful romances, “one more public than the other”, she commented, and the second, induced by Agnes herself, was an engagement that would only make Marian unhappy.
Agnes’s nephew (on her husband’s side), Dashiell (David Furr) was an interesting, interested, wealthy, and widowed man, with a daughter who was Marian’s student. The young woman had a hard time realizing that he was considering asking her to marry him, practically until the moment he got down on one knee in front of everyone, leaving her with no alternative but to accept him.

“I don’t know many people who love a public proposal”, recalled the actress in an interview in 2023. For her, Marian, for the first time trying to follow Agnes’ guidance, understood that the union would be good for her, even more so because she liked his daughter, Frances, with whom she identified. After all, she also lost her mother at a young age. And she tried, but besides not loving him, she saw that he still loved his late wife, it would be too much to start such a rational marriage.
The problem is that the breakup, which has not yet been announced, will probably be a “small scandal”, as Agnes warns her.
Marian made the right decision, but not everyone will see it that way. “If you were scandalized in society, you could be totally excluded, and you see how that affects the heroine at the end of [Edith Wharton] in The House of Mirth“, Louisa quoted making the same connection I made here in MiscelAna. She accepted the engagement because she was cornered, but now she is free and Larry wasted no time, but haste may be useless.
Theories about what could make the drama Delicious
In addition to the breakup with Dashiell, many noticed that Marian had a romance with Tom Raikes (Thomas Cocquerel), the lawyer was absent in season 2 after almost ruining Marian’s reputation. Now, married to a rich heiress in New York, he could still cross our heroine’s path and give her a headache. Without forgetting Dashiell, of course!
There is also a thorn in Larry’s side. He had a torrid romance with the widow Susan Blane (Laura Benanti), who her mother, Bertha (Carrie Coon), put to run. Many are betting that Susan will appear again and be pregnant with Larry, creating the worst and definitive obstacle for our favorite couple. Wouldn’t that be a delightful drama?

But there are still other potential dramas. On Marian’s side, Agnes would certainly oppose a marriage with someone with “new money”, in particular, the Russells. Luckily for Marian, Agnes is no longer the person in charge of the house, her leadership now belongs to Ada Forte (Cynthia Nixon), widow and millionaire, always supportive of her niece and a fan of love stories. There doesn’t seem to be any drama here.
The same cannot be said for the Russells. Bertha clearly “sold” Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) to the Duke of Buckingham, and as we saw, hated the idea of Larry being with Susan, ending the romance for him. Larry is suspicious of her interference and may rebel if Bertha, even though she likes Marian, thinks her son should marry someone more traditional and rich. It will be? This drama, although delicious, may not happen because Marian is from a traditional New York family and is Ada’s heir, so she is rich and has the right surname. But no one bets on easy happiness for both…
Two rebels and friends in love: the fans for “Larrian”
Marian Brooks is Louisa Jacobson‘s first prominent character and even though she is popular, she has her criticisms for being too modern for the period of The Gilded Age: she doesn’t want to get married without love, she doesn’t want to get married without love, she wants to work, be independent and decide her life as she wants. Precisely the characteristics that the actress considers make her so attractive.
“[Marian] doesn’t want her life handed to her. She wants to carve her own path,” she said in the same interview. “She’s someone who doesn’t let her shiny exterior fool her,” she added with precisely what makes her so perfect for Larry.

That’s right: perfect. The two have no secrets, they think alike and they have Louisa Jacobson’s fans too! There are already two seasons that end with Marian having spent an entire night in the company of her neighbor and with the two saying goodbye at the door. Calm! All within the property rules of the time.
In Season 1, it was the Russells’ prom. On Monday, the inauguration of the Metropolitan Opera House.
“I was definitely curious in the first season. I thought, “What is happening to them?” And I was trying to get answers from the creative team, and they were very tight-lipped about it,” Louisa said in the Collider interview. “But of course when I got the script for season two, I was aware. It’s just a pairing that makes a lot of sense. They are two very modern thinkers. They seem to want to go against the grain. Larry doesn’t just want to work for his father, he wants to be an architect. There’s also something cool about the fact that they’re both artistically minded. He likes architecture, construction, and design and Marian likes painting. I see a lot of similarities between the two,” she said.
And the most important. We saw how the two, “just friends”, gradually realized something more between them. Susan made her jealousy clear on more than one occasion, with Larry being somewhat disappointed when Marian accepted Dashiell’s marriage proposal in front of everyone. That’s why, when he knows she’s broken up, he takes the initiative in the kiss.

But there is something beautiful about the kiss: it is not stolen, but authorized and encouraged by Marian, at the same time as a relief and comfort. Louisa explained the scene further to Collider: “I feel like ever since he came back from Newport, that Marian was maybe unconsciously dying for him to kiss her, or she wanted to say that she had feelings for him, wanted to admit something, but couldn’t. ”, he commented. “He reminds her about the engagement and says, “Oh, yes, I forgot. Not just because my uncle is really sick, but also, like, ‘Fuck, I don’t want to talk about this in front of you because then we’ll be facing the reality of the fact that we’ll never be together,” she laughed.
“Finally, at the end of the night, that moment comes, right when she rings the doorbell to go home. She looks around and he finally does what she wants so much, but she doesn’t want to be the first to do it because there’s a part of her that doesn’t want to compromise the friendship they have – because it’s a true friendship. She doesn’t want to be lewd, but luckily Larry puts his fears aside and just gets on with it,” the actress explains. “I don’t think it’s the kind of thing where she’s caught completely off guard and can’t believe he kissed her. She knew she wanted this and is really happy to be allowed to look at him openly and romantically,” she said.
Isn’t it perfect? And now perhaps it’s time for “delicious drama”. I hope Larry and Marian are spared! As much as possible, of course!
