I considered that Hacks wanted to tell the story of an idol’s fall and recovery in just two seasons and that he did it perfectly. But then, in June 2022, MAX announced that the series would return for a third stage. Hey? So it is. Good and bad news!

The good thing is that the wonderful and award-winning Jean Smart had a spectacular arc in 20 episodes, in a phenomenal and complex journey of a diva who fought against everything and everyone to have fame, fortune, and independence only to reach old age and see everything taken away her. Her “salvation” is her challenge, dealing with a millennial screenwriter who represents everything she hates most. The relationship between Deborah Vance (Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) was the central focus of the series. However, there are several satellite characters with their own arcs, all of whom still deserve space.
As I described two years ago here at MiscelAna, in the first season we met the irascible and complicated comedian, Deborah Vance. At 70, she is still a success, but she could be more. When facing a dangerous downfall, she agrees to work with a young writer, Ava, who is also forced into this partnership.
What begins as an impossible and hellish mission turns into a mutual journey of regaining empathy and connection with the people around them. It could be cliché, but it’s smart. Their transformation is only noticeable by the two of them, one observing the other. Ava matures and finds her voice as a writer. Deborah regains the humanity she left aside when she devoted herself to a career in a man’s world. The two are saved. Now, a year after their split, Deborah is enjoying her success, while Ava seeks new opportunities in Los Angeles. A bit vague, agree?
The return is scheduled for May 2nd. As soon as I know more I’ll share!
