Ken complains in the movie Barbie: There is no Ken without Barbie. And in the clear snub that Barbie received from the academy, the confirmation that Ryan Gosling will appear singing Just Ken is at the same time a tribute and a response to the absence of Greta Gerwick and Margot Robbie in the nominations for the main categories raises the question: how to have Ken without Barbie?

So it is. It will be – and I’ll seal it here – one of the highlights of the broadcast of the 96th Oscars. Ryan Gosling, nominated at least three times to date, is confirmed on stage and will be wonderful in every way. More than anything because Barbie’s main “joke” is just like in patriarchal society, even Ken (Ryan Gosling) is irrelevant in Barbie’s (Margot Robbie) universe, but, in the real world, even Ken has the prominence that she does not have. It is confirmation of the theory! And if we women still had any doubts.
Just Ken is one of the songs nominated for an Oscar this year, having surprised Billie Eilish, nominated for the emotional What Was I Made For? also nominated at the SAG Awards. That’s right, I still bet that Billie will win her second statuette, but we can’t ignore the weight of having a star of Ryan’s caliber on the Oscar stage defending her song.

The 2024 Oscars will be the Oppen-Oscar, a wash of Oppenheimer in the main categories, but, in terms of financial results and popularity, Barbie is at a level unreachable in 2023. It generated billions of dollars in ticket sales and a cultural movement embraced by social networks around the world. If it were a film by and by men, it would be leading the Oscars. That’s why having Just Ken played by “Ken” is so significant.

Will Just Ken beat What Was I Made for? I have a feeling that it isn’t, but if it is, it will reinforce my personal theory of Ryan Gosling’s curse (who was present in the humiliation of La La Land)… shall we follow?
