King Aegon (review and trailer)

MAX’s coordinated campaign for the launch of the second season of House of the Dragon has already started BRILLIANTLY, giving each side’s versions of the civil war.

In the Greens’ view, they are just being realistic and traditional. The wrong one is Rhaenyra, whose right to the throne was only a facade and thanks to her behavior (with children considered bastards) she could never be a good Queen. Really? I’m Team Black so I disagree, but let’s go to the Greens’ “arguments”.

The Greens’ defense

Although Otto (Rhys Iphans) already has a coup plan in store for the moment of Viserys’ (Paddy Considine) death, it is Alicent (Olivia Cooke) who leads what she considers to have been her late husband’s true will.

We know that he was talking about another Aegon and that in his delirium he confused her with Rhaenyra, but in Alicent’s linear and limited mind, everything made sense. “A few weeks ago my husband was alive and the kingdom was at Peace,” she comments with images of her religious devotion and leadership in the Small Council, as the green flags are raised in King’s Landing. “When he died he knew that the Kingdom would not accept a Queen”, she continues “Rhaenyra’s supporters will believe what they want, but Viserys wanted Aegon to succeed him”, she argues.

The images of her son-like arrogance – dangerously echoing Joffrey Baratheon – contrast with anything any Green might consider better than Rhaenyra.

We go straight to the battles, with Daemon (Matt Smith) observing the Green camp and Otto commenting that “they (the blacks) now do not desire the good of the Kingdom, but the satisfaction of revenge”. This is a complaint, in some way, about Aemond’s (Ewan Mitchell) thoughtless action that caused Luke’s death.

We then see several images of Aegon and battles, and stating “I am as fearsome as any of them”. Error in every way, do you agree? Even with Alicent warning him of the sacrifices made to place him on the Throne.

The emotion is hearing the famous phrase from the book: “My uncle is a challenge that I accept with pleasure, if he dares to face me”, said by a frightening and charismatic Aemond talking to Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel).

And super exciting: we see the first images of Alysanne Blackwood!

The Greens’ final argument for the conflict is said by Otto, of course: “We will win and we will bring Peace, but you have to accept that the path to victory is violence”, he warns, with images of executions and clashes.

“Great, let’s go to War then”, celebrates Aegon II.

Alicent complains that everything she has done for the Order and the Kingdom is not recognized, and the chant that I refuse to echo closes the trailer: “For the one true King, Aegon”.

What do you think?
