The future of And Just Like That

Many fans were torn between feeling nostalgic for Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and skeptical about meeting her now in her almost 60s. Her romantic confusion at 30 had appeal, but, six seasons and two films later, her story was more than told and resolved. Still, And Just Like That continued the series.

The irregular result of the two seasons shown on MAX did not prevent, in times of cuts and discontinuations, the spin-off (after all, they left the original Sex and The City in the past), And Just Like That from gaining confirmation for a third season. What else remains for you to say is our doubt. Let’s list the points questioned.

Carrie is widowed and in a new house

In two seasons of And Just Like That, we follow a painful process of significant losses for Carrie, including the death of Mr. Big (Chris Noth), the radical move of Stanford Blatch (Willie Garson, who passed away during filming) to Japan and finally moving apartments.

Of the three, Carrie’s change of address was most significant for those who follow the series. The writer’s apartment in the Village was one of the iconic settings for Sex in the City, and although New York City was the central element of the plot, it was Carrie’s small studio that enchanted us equally. Even though she was married, she kept the property, renovated it, and – when she became a widow – returned to it.

When they brought Aidan Shaw (John Corbett) into the story, it seemed like it would close an important romantic cycle, as it was Big’s existence that got in the way of both of them. But, out of trauma and principle, Aidan refused to enter the apartment where she lived so many bad times, and Carrie, determined to start her life over with him, sold the property, buying another spectacular one in its place. However, we say goodbye to the two when they break off their romance once he decides to stay away from New York and take care of his troubled son. Carrie refuses to leave New York, and still can’t go back. The third season will have the character single, more than over her widowhood, and in a gigantic new house to call her own.

New fixed characters, some that don’t return

One of the positive things, that generated some strangeness, was And Just Like That‘s decision to bring new and fixed characters into the lives of Carrie, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte (Kristin Davis). All of them, without exception, also resolved the issue of lack of diversity in the cast, which was great.

It wasn’t the characters themselves that didn’t work, but the fact that we didn’t want to know anyone other than the three central characters (Kim Cattrall refused to return, depriving us of Samantha Jones) that hindered the receptivity of the ‘newcomers’. The division was to give each of the main ones a new space where more diverse people could circulate.

In Charlotte’s case, friend Lisa Todd Waxley (Nicole Ari Parker), took a while to get involved but her entrance in the story is consistent with the rich Upper East Side universe of the series. Carrie, more reserved, brought her young neighbor Lisette Alee (Katerina Tannenbaum) – who took over the Village studio – and the best addition of all, Seema Patel (Sarita Choudhury), her new best friend who is the replacement for Samantha.

It was in the Miranda Hobbes subplot that the biggest conflicts remained. After so much back and forth with Steve (David Eigenberg), Miranda falls in love with Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez), and the public does not embrace this love story. I’ve already analyzed what went wrong before, and it’s not because of the love between the two women, but the narcissistic way Miranda handled the romance, even more so, when she put the “blame” for everything on Steve, a character adored by Sex and The City fans, without giving the respect that every female audience expected for such a significant breakup. The result was a rejection of Che, who was fun, engaging, and could bring a lot to And Just Like That. So, unsurprisingly, it has already been announced that for the third season, we will no longer have the comedian and it is an incredible loss because Sara Ramirez is a great actress.

Another one who doesn’t return is Miranda’s new best friend, Nya Wallace (Karen Pittman). Another loss that will be greatly felt because Nya has everything to do with the women in the series and went through a painful separation, she was recovering and had found a great guy to start over. She also does not return in the third season, but the reason is justifiable: Karen Pittman has a prominent role in The Morning Show and the Apple TV Plus series will record at the same time as And Just Like That, which made the actress choose to She chose right. And now?

The challenges of finally telling something new

Therefore Miranda is the one who will have to bring the news to the next stage, a danger because when she gained prominence, the series began to receive greater criticism. Carrie was always the leader, s

The period of mourning was long and took away the positive soul from the universe established in Sex and the City.

Having the main character experience a justified and existential crisis had an impact on everything. Without that passion for life, facing losses and material stability that allows her to navigate without fear, the construction of the drama in And Just Like That was difficult. Charlotte’s life has its domestic problems, but it is perfect. Miranda’s life changed radically, but it was so impetuous (something that traditional Miranda would never be) that instead of bringing newness, it caused strangeness and Carrie felt as if she were drugged.

The flirtation of bringing Aidan into the story was a nostalgic wave that was appreciated by fans but has since been discarded as well, although there was nothing that would stop Carrie from entering into a long-distance relationship.

Therefore, when they return to recording now in 2024, it will effectively be the first time that And Just Like That leaves Sex and the City in the past and comes to tell us something completely new. Both of the cast’s losses will be felt, but who knows, maybe we’ll fall in love with Carrie again? I’m in the crowd.
