If we’re talking about cyberbullying with Princess Catherine (Kate Middleton), nothing comes close to what showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff still face on social media. The famous D&D people were at the forefront of the Game of Thrones TV adaptation. They went from geniuses to the most execrated on social media, something of frightening hatred from fans outraged by the series’ conclusion.
This same audience yearned and feared for the duo’s next project (they worked separately on some projects), even more so because they left HBO (now MAX) for competitor Netflix. The wait is over in 2024, with another literary adaptation from the duo who love a fantasy theme. The choice is still bold, they went straight to the complicated romance 3 Body Problem, which, like GOT, has a niche and passionate audience. One cannot question D&D’s passion for flirting with the aggressive.

Let’s get to the point: if you haven’t read the book, you will find the series great, with some flaws, but still intelligent and engaging. If you are a reader, you will obviously be more critical. The Studio Pow Podcast! will dedicate itself to the series with an expert who has already mentioned “problems”. This is not a complaining review, I’ll warn you.
3 Body Problem is a story by Chinese science fiction author Liu Cixin, which forms a trilogy published in 2006 and which navigates between a fictional past, present, and future in which Earth deals with an encounter with an alien civilization from a nearby system. of three stars similar to the Sun. As dense and complex as Game of Thrones, D&D are experts at dealing with it.
There is a Chinese film from 2015 and a series, released in early 2023, with local critical success but not yet circulated abroad. The Netflix version features faces familiar to GOT fans and, for Netflix standards, the effects are ok. Nothing that comes close to the cinemas that are MAX or Apple TV, however.
The reactors immediately shouted that the adaptive choices were “bold”, as excessive, which is certainly precious. The final cliffhanger leaves us wanting to see more and that was the goal because it’s still too early to determine if 3 Body Problem is any good. There will certainly be a second season, although it has not been made official.

In the non-linear narrative – which makes sense here – we follow how some of the most intelligent scientists of their time end up becoming likely channels for the survival of humanity, which doesn’t know it but is about to be invaded by Trisolaran extraterrestrials, who are not friendly, of course.
While in the novel, the main protagonist is Wang Miao, a nanotechnology professor who is reluctantly recruited by the police to help them investigate the multiple suicides of a group of scientists, some of whom he knew personally. He soon begins to see numbers flashing before his eyes, a countdown that leads to something he has no idea about. As the vision corrodes his mental state and distances him from his family, he discovers a strange, immersive video game that many of the scientists played before they died. In Three-Body Problem, players are tasked with solving the mystery of a strange alien planet that is constantly on the brink of destruction. They don’t even suspect, or discover belatedly, that it’s not really a game.

What fans have had to accept is that the professor is divided into five characters: the quintet of former physics students united after their teacher dies by suicide: Augie (Eiza González), Saul (Jovan Adepo), Jin (Jess Hong ), Will (Alex Sharp) and Jack (John Bradley), each with their own characteristics and leading part of the plot. Augie is the one who sees the countdown, but it is Jin and Jack who enter the video game. The other two are still somewhat satellites. In the eight episodes, the narrative is supported by the first book, presenting the conflict and giving us tips on how the problem will progress.
There are surprises everywhere and we get involved quickly. What we want to confirm is that YES, D&D has the best opportunity to drown out the noise of Game of Thrones, but honestly, it’s another theme, another book, and another universe. Let’s leave each fantasy world in its own fiefdom, I look forward to more.
